Is Against the law...................!!!!!

Had a Memo round the office today....a paragraph or two below from it.

"If your customers or employees are listening to copyright music on your premises, by law you must ensure you hold the necessary permission. This includes music played by any means, including, live performances, CD, Radio, Tv, on telephone systems, Internet plus many more"

"This is because when a song or piece of music is written, the person who wrote it owns the copyright and therefore has the right to decide how and when it should be played"

Basically what it means is to listen to music at work the boss needs a licence......

Has anyone else heard this pathectic 'Rule'...??

As if Songwriters n singers NEED the extra money generated from us paying to listen to their music.....why write it in the first place if we have to have permission to listen to it....

How come we're allowed to listen in our cars.....or will we need a licence for that too...??

:o)

It basically means music played in public places

Don't put too many people in your car or they'll get you lol

Julie

Julie Report 6 May 2008 15:57

Our Boss has told our drivers they're not allowed to listen to it in their cabs.....but how can anyone stop you...??

The mind boggles...!!

The letter was from 'The Performaning Right Society'

It's the same with downloading music...it's illegal but too many people are doing it so they can't control it.

I guess if youve had a letter then someone has snitched and they do occassionally take some to court.

Legally we can't post lyrics either but Im not loosing sleep over it lol

So..let me get this right...it's not illegal for a (lisenced) radio station to play music, but it is illegal for us to listen to it?

Radio has been an integral part of our lives for more than 60 years now, and it's now they decide to tell us we have been doing wrong all this time?

The mind boggles.

Devon Dweller

Devon Dweller Report 6 May 2008 16:32

No so long as the radio station is licenced it's down to them BUT if you decided to put a big speaker in the middle of a shopping centre then you too would have to have a licence

Julie

Julie Report 6 May 2008 16:32

Exactly that Tw...just doesn't make sense.

But even when companies put us on hold for hours...if the music they play is Copyright music n they haven't a license for broadcasting it then they're breaking the law.

Strikes me as completely daft.

What if every employee was listening to a transistor radio? That wouldn't be public would it?

kay Report 6 May 2008 16:36

They are breaking the copyright law playing music while you wait on the end of the phone.

It's all down to private useage and very technical...like if you buy a cd you can make as many copies as you like for yourself but not for other people...or if you watch your own video/dvd you legally cant invite the whole town in to watch it with you.

Hi...it is only illegal if you do not have a licence from the "PRS".......

any place of work should have one an has been law for many yrs......if the buisness does have one it also covers for all vechiles used by the buisness,,,

only know this cause i have just had to renew ours for work..an the price has increased to a ridiculous ammount which is why alot of small companies have not renewed,,Rachel..xx

P.s yr car (if only used for private use )..is covered by yr t,v licence...daft init..xx

Devon Dweller

Devon Dweller Report 6 May 2008 16:43

Trouble is I dont think many people know they have to have a licence and/or care

Julie

Julie Report 6 May 2008 16:43

It is all a bit silly tho isn't it. It all boils down to Money....n who's pocket to line it with.

Devon Dweller

Devon Dweller Report 6 May 2008 16:45

I agree but I'd dearly love to go and slap a few boy racers who park outside my house with their thud thud music blaring while their other half pop's into the shop lol

Julie

Julie Report 6 May 2008 16:46

That is daft Rach isn't it.....

So a taxi driver..........needs to buy his car, Tax it to be able to drive it on the road, Insure it to carry the public, have a licence to use it for the public, n pay for a licence to allow his customers to listen to the radio which is supplied with the car.

Rach...how much is the licence...??

AnnCardiff

AnnCardiff Report 6 May 2008 16:49

this is by no means a new law - you have to pay a licence fee to the Performing Rights Society in order to play music in a public place. I know of this because for years I worked for a tobacco company [Manikin Cigars] and we had a radio which played throughout the factory. You have to purchase a license to broadcast publicly - this was back in the mid fifties.
