UPDATE PAGE 3

What an awfull day I've had.

Yesterday i noticed my 9 month old rabbit Bonnie's right hind leg was looking very swollen & loosin fur on her foot.

Took her to the Vet this morning. They said she may have broken a bone or cut herself on something & that if she had then her licking her foot would cause the swelling & loss of fur. They took her in for sedation & xrays.

Got a phone call a couple of hours later to say it was not good news. Unknown to me she had an ID tag on her leg that was too small. It had cut off her circulation & killed her foot. she has to have her leg amputated tomorrow.

The shop I bought her from tried to fob me off with excuses of how it wasn't their fault as they ask breeders not to supply them with baby bunnies with ID tags. I phoned their head office who have agreed to pay all vet bills.

Apparantly these rings are put on the rabbits when they are babies & stay on for life. The problem with my poor Bonnie is that the breeder has put the wrong ring on her. She's a Dwarf Lop ear. the breeder has given her a ring for a Miniature Dwarf Lop.

A|ny one out there with Rabbits please check your bunnies & if they have a ring on them get your vet to remove it. Mistakes can happen. If I'd known Bonnie had an ID ring on her I would have had it removed.

I would hate what has happened to Bonnie to happen to anyone else. The pictures I've been given by the vet & the sight of Bonnies little leg once her fur had been removed are possibly the most traumatic thing I have ever seen. this wasn't a little back street pet shop. It was a very well known national company.

Please check your rabbits.

Chrisa

Hun, so sad to hear such awful news - you must be gutted, poor poor Bonnie. Fancy putting on wrong ID tag; had no idea they did that.

We had Izzy (dwarf Lop Ear), such a sweetie. Took her to vets, did all right things, died shortly after we got her from a hole in the heart.

Cried and cried. Sending you big hug (((((hug)))))

Awwww Chrisa, how terribly sad for you and Bonnie.

I wasn't aware rabbits were ID tagged then sold from shops.
I know how expensive the veterinary can be and pet insurance for rabbits is in excess of £20/month, I'm really pleased for you that the shop has agrreed to cover the bills.

I hope all goes well for Bonnie during the next few days. As a total rabbit freak I am gutted for you and her. All the very best.

Thank you Shani

I've spent the whole afternoon crying. At first they thought she'd have to be put to sleep but the senior vet came in & said she should be ok after amputation instead.

Had to leave her there tonight & her little friend Jenni keeps looking around the run for her.

Thanks for the hug. I definitely need it.

Thanks Tina~Marie

I've had Rabbits since I was a child as have both my sisters.

Apparantly the ID is because shes of show quality from show stock. I called the Brittish Rabbit Council which is where the ring was registered. They wouldn't tell me who the breeder was but they did say the shop should have been told about the ring as they would have been some kind of paperwork involved because of her having the ID.

It all seems very fishy to me. I don't understand why a breeder would sell a rabbit they had gone to the trouble of tagging & registering to a pet shop.

I feel so sorry for her & so guilty that i didn't know it was there.

I write poems Chrisa, really helps emotionally. We've had hamsters, 4 cats (2 still here, Freddie and Annabella), Izzy, now a pup called Cassius.

Love them all dearly hun like you, part of the family. x

Thanks Straykitten. Both my sisters have checked their rabbits today too. They were all bought from the same shop. The shop manager says they ask breeders not to put the rings on but it obviously happens. They knew it was possible yet never warned me or checked themselves.

Thank you too Kitty. Hugs are just what i need!

You weren't to know it was there Chrisa, we all know how skittish and furry bunnies can be.
I feel guilty that I didn't see my Micky's mite infestation under his chin... all because he is so furry.

If you aren't aware there is a tag you wouldn't be looking, so Thank you for this thread it's informative although so sad.

I don't think I'm creative enough Shani, I'd love to be though.

I call all my pets my babies cause thats what they are. Even the dogs are wondering where she is. I'm getting her a bed ready in the dinning room ready for when she comes home tomorrow.

i'm keeping everything crossed that all goes well tomorrow.

Tina~Marie she is a big ball of fluff. She has the sweetest big brown eyes surrounded by fluffy fur.
She was absolutely fine on saturday then yesterday I noticed she wasn't walking & hopping about properly & she was swollen.

I got a shock this morning when I went out to check her. She hadn't moved all night! She'd lain in the same place & went to the toilet where she lay so she also now has burns from her urine but the vet isn't too worried about them as they've been discovered so quickly.

Its all happened so fast since first noticing anything was wrong with her.

Everyone tells me not to feel bad but I can't help it. I keep thinking what if.

Ours are my babies too hun, just put their trust in you, love you.

Just take paper, pen, pencil write what comes - not all poems rhyme, not all same. Nice to be individual.
Perhaps write thoughts, that helps.

Me neither HRH.
I knew show rabbits were ID tagged but I never even considered it happening to pet rabbits.

I didn't realise the tags were put on as babies though & left on for life.

I suppose if you know about the ring you can keep an eye on it but for a breeder to put the wrong size ring on then not tell anyone it's there seems cruel to me.

I think I might give it a go tonight. See what comes out.

i don't think I'll get much sleep so it'll be nice to have something to do.

thank you for all your support. Its really appreciated.

What an awful thing to happen to you and your bunny.
ID tags seem a bit unnecessary, I'm sure your rabbit can't be the first one this has happened to. Couldn't they microchip them?

Just to let you all know I've been in touch with the RSPCA this morning as I'm very concerned about any other rabbits from the same breeder who may also have had the wrong size rings put on.

They are going to contact the Brittish Rabbit council to get the details of the breeder to let them know what has happened to Bonnie & find out where the rest of the litter she was born with are. They are also very concerned that the rest of the litter will have the wrong size rings on. they are also going to investigate the shop concerned re their policies on where they buy their rabbits from & what precautions are taken by the company.

Bonnie is still in surgery, she's been in for an hour and a half so far. Hopefully i'll know soon if she's going to make it through the op.

Thank you Catherine. I looked on the net last night for info about rabbits with three legs. It appears she will manage fine with one leg missing but you have to be very carefull incase of pressure sores on the remaining back leg.
