An interesting thread!

My parents moved around a bit, but both have roots in the south - maternal side is Hampshire, Dorset, London (and East Prussia!!), paternal side is Gloucestershire and Derbyshire. Heather in Cheshire, my g-g-g-grandfather did the opposite move to your ancestor - Derbyshire to Glos in the early 1800's! I live relatively close to my 'roots'. Also, OH's paternal side came from Bristol.

OH and I live 90 miles from where we were born.

My paternal side came from Essex, in 1700's then my 2 x great grandparents moved to another part of Essex (now East London) in 1833.
My great grandmother was born in Haggerston, Middx, Her mother came from Clerkenwell, and her father from Buckinghamshire.

My maternal family, Mother's family stayed in the same area from 1700's. Essex (now East London) Father's family came from Bedford in 1885, to Essex.

OH both sides of family born and stayed in East London. Although his maternal great grandmother came from Surrey, and his 2 x great grandparents from Essex.

We now live in Hampshire.

You have raised a very interesting topic! I have been researching my own tree and my husband's. He is from London, and I am from Cumbria. Oddly enough, my research has shown that his gg grandparents and my gg grandparents were from the same area - Sunderland - and both gg grandfathers worked in the ship yards there. I know there are likely to be many similar tales, but I found this quite surprising!

Hi Sally,
I suppose you could say I'm a bit of a mongrel really lol!
My family having come from various places in Britain.
Although Manchester born and bred but, now living in the capital I was very surprised to discover that dad's family have originated from London at least since the early 1700's.
After that the lines become quite diverse, with ancestors coming from Shropshire, Kent, Suffolk, Staffordshire and Bristol, as well as Preston and Liverpool.
One great grandfather was a BS born in Calais but dying in Manchester.

So over all, I imagine I am now living closest to where fathers ancestors originated initially.

I live in the same city, but just 3 miles from where I was born and brought up.

My Dad moved from Derbyshire to Yorkshire in 1912 but he was the only one to move.
All my paternal side I can trace back to smal villages in North East Derbyshire right back to early 1600's.

Mum's side I only know she was born in Sheffield and brought to Leeds to be adopted.

Interesting thread.

I've always lived in east London, and my parents and grandparents lived in the east end. Before that most of them were from Russia, so I'm a fair distance from my roots!

Very funny Dave! :D
It seems to me that quite a few people have close geographical links to their roots still, which with the way we can move about these days is pretty amazing. I find it most 'spooky' when people move and end up living close to their ancestors homes without realising it till they start this family tree lark.

I moved 28 times in as many years until I moved here. Thought I was the first of my family to live in Winchester - then gran told me she lived here when she was 'In Service' in 1925!!
I felt really at home in Cornwall - my dad's family came from there - for generations!!
Mum's family came from Buckinghamshire, Hampshire and Suffolk. My daughters were born in Essex - but only about 3 miles from where mum's Suffolk ancestors came from.

I lived on the Borders for a while - only to find my cornish ancestors had lived just down the road for a generation when the tin mines closed in Cornwall - the next generation moved back down to Cornwall.

I'm back in Hampshire now, but moved here from the New Forest where some of my mum's lot came from. There are still plenty of people there bearing the surnames of my mum's ancestors.

Yes weired isn't it how some places you go you feel at home. At 15 I worked in Warwickshire and on the train down we passed through Tamworth. I had never been there but I remember feeling drawn to the place. My mothers family all came from that area I found out 4 years ago. Went to work in Lincolnshire found that my great great grand father came from near where I worked and agaIn felt at home. Always loved the sound of the forest of dean, my fathers family came from Gloucestershire and the close area around. Married and came to live here found that my fathers mothers family had lived here back to 1600s. Think we have still got our homing instincts. Elaine.
