As you know I have not long had an op and still have a large dressing on the wound which is still stitched and has to be kept dry.
The wound is roughly an inch under my left b**b.

My hair badly needs washing now, I can't bend forward over the bath.
Any (sensible) suggestions as to how I can keep the dressing dry while washing my hair under the shower over the bath.

Stand in bath, unhook shower head and hose from attachment, lean forward a bit with head forward and down a bit, and wet your hair, turn off water, shampoo hair and repeat first part with shower attachment again till well rinsed.
If you don't think you can lean forward enough and water might trickle down, get a clean bin bag and cut hole for head and arms and wear it into shower, and follow instructions from unhook shower head etc.
Make sure no one can see you lol
Hope this works, makes you feel lots better when your hair is clean, doesn't it?

hi ann i know it may look daft but why don't you cut holes in the bottom and sides of the binbag to go over your head and put your arms thru at least it will keep you dry xxx

Ann why not try dry shampoo? You can get them in boots and brush them through your hair.

Ros, yes that would be the simple way wouldn't it? The first dressing I had the hospital put waterproof over the ordinary one, not sure if I have seen the waterproof ones at the chemist and not really up to shopping yet.

Bin bag was what we came up with. Nurse at surgery suggested cling film but how do you seal it over the dressing?

Oh well something to keep me thinking I suppose.

Debbs, i think it might pull too much on the stitches when I came to stand up, I have a problem normally as I have a bad back.

JoyBoroAngel Report 4 Mar 2008 21:20

the cling film really works

but you have to have it tight

Ann, most hairdressers now have an option of basins, so could you possible manage to lean back and have it washed, bless, I wish I could come and do it for you, although if I had to style it, Goodness help you, that is my treat of the week, getting my hair washed and dried, only £8 so I think I work hard enough to deserve it, hopefully you could manage a lay back washXX hope you find a solutionXX

Lots of suggestions here, you are a helpful lot, thank you.

JoyBoroAngel

JoyBoroAngel Report 4 Mar 2008 21:25

Ann you have to stretch it really tight

and it seals against your skin

Maddiecow Report 4 Mar 2008 21:33

Ann you wrap it right round. I had an op in Oct not there bit an equally akward part and showered by using those menoline plaster type things then wraped cling film right round my body.

After shower used those antispectic wipe things then put on a fresh dressing.
