I bid and won a quite expensive item yesterday on ebay. I noted that the address on the listing was a bit strange, New York, UK. I had assumed a typo somewhere along the line.

When ebay confirmed my win, they gave the sellers address as Tottenham, London.

I then had an invoice from the seller giving their address as Berkshire.

Now, may be I am being overly suspicious here, but why would these addresses not concur? I note the seller has been on ebay for 5 years and seems to be selling as a business, so probably bona fide but I still feel uneasy.

Heather.
Just relayed your post to my son who has been on Ebay for over 5 years. Says don't go ahead with the order. Contact the seller and ask for his phone contact details and speak to him direct.
Someone here in N Wales was in court this week after scamming loads of people for laptops they never received.(have to add wasn't my son) Lol

have you read their feedback,,,just ask on the feed back how bonafide they are,,,,,,,,,,have they other items on the site,,?

are they listed under buisness on 192,?

Heather

Heather Report 23 Feb 2008 12:26

They have been on the site apparently for about 5 years. They have lots of other items for sale (all ladies accessories) Feedback is 99.1% - the 8 negatives are for slow delivery.

Bobtanian Report 23 Feb 2008 12:31

they might actually live in tottenham but the business located elsewhere?
I have bought stuff from a uk/ireland address, but the item actually came from china.......methinks that they only order it AFTER they have sold it!! if you get my drift....

It is also possible that the account has been hijacked - and that's why it shows as a long membership.

Tread with caution

i have had an ebay account for a few years.

go back on to the product you have bought and see if it says ebay pretected.

if it is then you will be ok.

last year i sold an item the buyer claimed not to off recived it so they put in a buyer dispute and i had no choice but to refund it. you can only do this if you are fully verified and are paying by paypal and the item has to be less than £500.

if you want pm there ebay name and i will check them out for you.

Rhoda Report 23 Feb 2008 12:58

go back onto ebay

go to your page and click on items won.

then click onto the item your on about.

scroll down to the botton of the page were it says payment details

first box should say paypal the next box along should say accepted and then the last box should
say £150 buyer protection on this item.

if your not paying by paypal then you wont be covered.

Heather

Heather Report 23 Feb 2008 13:05

Oh dear, I wish Id never started this.

She says in the body of the item that she will accept paypal from verified pay pal members (which I am). But at the end it says postal order or personal cheque. On the right hand side it says that the item is not covrered by paypal protection.

Rhoda

Rhoda Report 23 Feb 2008 13:10

don't buy if it's not covered by paypal protection.

anyone selling on ebay for over 5 years should have buyer protection on there item if they havent it means there not verified.

you can email ebay and just let them know your concerens they should deal with it in a couple of days.

you have right to cancel, &,notify ebay of your concerns,,,,,,

Heather

Heather Report 23 Feb 2008 13:26

Do you have a right to cancel though

Rhoda

Rhoda Report 23 Feb 2008 13:27

dont buy and report them.

there address they have is in america i just checked on google's map but they have united kingdom on the address instead.

also none of there items have paypal as an payment option.

for someone to have an ebay account for that long but not a paypal account is strange as its the most easy and safeiest way to buy and sell.

heather remember never to buy from someone who does not offer paypal as an option.

Rhoda

Rhoda Report 23 Feb 2008 13:29

yes you can cancel all they can do about it is leave a neg feedback but then you can leave a response to it explaining your reason.

so when others see you have a neg they will no its not your fault.

Heather

Heather Report 23 Feb 2008 14:01

The thing is, in the body of the item it says she accepts paypal from verified members.

On the receipt she sent there are the options, postal order, personal cheque and "other". If you tick on other the next page says "I will shortly be sending payment by other". Now Im assuming that is where you could say you are paying her by paypal. But if I did that would I be covered by paypal protection?

Rhoda, you say the listing is for USA? Gawd,it sounds a bit weird doesnt it.

Heather

Heather Report 23 Feb 2008 14:17

Oh another thing I should add. The surname of the seller is different on the ebay notification and the sellers invoice. They both sound asian names and the first initial is the same but the second name is different. I suppose it could be someone who married and hasnt changed their details, but youd think someone selling that many items would ensure all their details were correct.

Rhoda

Rhoda Report 23 Feb 2008 14:40

you can change your address and name as and when you like.

if you have a address registered to a paypal account you carnt changed this address but it is hidden from anyone else seeing it.
the name and address they see can change.

me and my sister share our ebay account and when she is buying i change my address details so her stuff will go staright to her house and then change it back again when i'm buying something for my self.

when paypal is an option it should be there with the other options not sent separetly.

when you go on your won item on the right where it says pay now its this bit where you should be able to pay by paypal straight away.

Rhoda

Rhoda Report 23 Feb 2008 14:49

if you get them to send a paypal invoice through ebay then yes you will be protected by ebay's buyer protection.

don't give them your email address. then when they send the invioce ebay will send it to your email address that you used to register your account the invoice do not go to your emial's on your ebay page.

if you get the invioce in your real email address and you havent given them your email address then you will know its defently from ebay and not a spuff one.
