Amongst others, I'm following the Hawkins line for a friend - and lose the plot when James Hawkins marries Ellen Cawte

Can anyone follow James Cawte with Father Steven back from his marriage to Sarah ??

Ancestry trees appear to have assigned a James Cawte born 1833 to be son of Charles and Ann (nee Pain) all of Hursley, Hants, but his marriage certificate says something else.

Thanks for your help

Birth Date 1837
Birth Place New Alresford, City of Winchester, Hampshire, England

No death or burial place or date given.

**** ADDED: Actually, that "record" above is just a link from the death record of her son Alfred - so ignore!

Also, she's NOT the woman of same name and age who died in March 1910, Greenwich.
That one was married to Frederick Cawte, and was in and out of Greenwich workhouse.

Looking at 1891 image, James's birthplace is Fareham. All the 'places' have a line through them at an angle, for some unknown reason

Sarah is in 74 trees on Ancestry!

Some say she died in 1891 - with no proof.
A woman named Sarah Steel Cawte did die in 1891, aged 66, in Romsey - but that's not her. Sarah Steel Cawte is on the 1891 census, in Romsey.

Others say the 1910 death mentioned above is hers. I doubt it, but you might feel it worth buying a copy of the cert to check.

That Stephen was an Ag Lab

James who married Sarah Bell was apparently a number of years older than the one born in 1846, unfortunately

Thanks for your replies - I think we're all going round in the same circles !!

Clutching at straws ErikaH is probably the nearest as Wymering is covered by the Fareham RD.

Posted by ErikaH - 1851 - James Cawte aged 11
Also in the Workhouse with surname Cawte, born Wymering
Hannah, 6, Harriet,5, Charles, 9,.........and Stephen, 21, Farm Labourer, b. Middlesex

In 1841 - Stephen 13 (or a bad 18), Hester 11, George 9, Charles 2, Hannah 7 and Harriett 4 are all in Fareham Workhouse. Must be the same 'family' but ages way out. All b Hampshire

A Hannah Cawte (? the one aged 6 1851 workhouse from the census posted) is still there in 1861 listed as a cripple and long term resident having been there for 20 years 0 months.

If Stephen was born in Middlesex, maybe that's why James and family ended up there by 1881 (more straws).

Close but not close enough to be a certainty, that line may just have to stop at James.

An 1850 newspaper report has a Stephen Cawte committed to the Hants County Prison for 14 days in 1850 for Misbehaviour in the Union Poorhouse!

I doubt he's the same Stephen who was occupying a Lot for sale in FarNham in 1853

A Charles Cawte (aged 2 in 1841 and 9 in 1851 Fareham workhouse) was baptised 7.4.1842 by Eliza Cawte from Fareham Union Wymering

Esther (Hester) Cawte married 1850 St Pancras Old Church to James Ward. Father listed as Stephen Cawte - Dead

That would be great Jink20 if it's "my' James - born 1866 Hayes, Middx, married Ellen 24.8.1890
or
His Father James bap 1838 Northmoor, Oxon married Emma Drinkwater 18.8.1859 Hartington, Middx

The Gosport chap was probably the one registered in Alverstoke 1842 mmn McIver as per GRO. There is a marriage of a Charles Cawte to Jane McKeever Q2 1939 Portsea island - on the other side of Portsmouth Harbour to Alverstoke/Gosport
