I hate cooking. But I love my slow cooker. For instance ...I just put my chicken portions in with a tin of homepride sauce and go out. Pick up a bag of chips on the way home, and walk in to a meal.

I think you have sold it to me!! Trouble is now, Argos £9.99 V Lakeland £19.99. Is it you get what you pay for or you pay for the name?

I too love my s/cooker, great if we go out for the day, usually do a casserole, recently bought a slow cooker recipe book off e-bay amazed at what you can do.

Ann the one I bought is page 706, item 2 in the Argos book. It's priced at £16.99 but is on offer at £9.99. It is as good, no it's better than my previous Tower model.

Interesting thread Ann.

I have a slow cooker but I don't use it very often. I do a massive stew in it, then freeze the rest.

I don't know what else I can do in mine. So this thread has been very useful. Thanks xx

Looking at argus on line they do a lot of different slow cookers. The M Richards one looks a good buy has anyone got that one?

I love mine, have a normal size one and an extra large one and use them all the time. We had some tough venison but as soon as I left it in the slow cooker it was as tender as anything and very tasty.
I cook my steak and kidney overnight so its ready for me to turn into pies the next day and love doing chicken in various sauces.
I bought one for a french friend and she loves it and have just bought the Tesco one for my daughter.
Had mine now for about 15 years and it was great to come home from work to a meal waiting to be dished up.

I bought a slow cooker receipe book for about a quid off of Ebay a while back Ill see if I still have it. It was in PDF - But I think it may be on an older computer.

First one I had was a large family size one, with large removable crock bowl. Cooked many a meal in it.

Now I am on my own, I have a smaller Morphy Richards one, which has a 2 handle pan that sits on a hot plate. Good thing about that is I can speed start the cooking by using it on the cooker first, ie browning things and bring to boil etc, then put it on its own hotplate.

And when I worked, I used to prepare things the night before and put it on to cook before going out in the morning - and it is lovely to come home to the smell of a cooked meal. You also enjoy eating it more - how many of us slave over a meal and then cant eat it or dont enjoy it when it's finished? lol

It's also very good if you want to use cheap cuts of meat and the slow cooking tenderorises even the toughest meat.

Cant afford a slow cooker? Some modern ovens have a setting for slow cooking. Older ones, just set it to lowest possible setting and use a good casserole dish with a lid.

I love my slow cooker though I don't use it as often as I could. Mine is an old one without the detachable inner so a bit of a nuisance to wash.

My husband kept the mulled wine going in ours during our New Year's Eve party!

The other gadget I really like is is in the Lakeland catalogue. We have a Remoska which we use in our static caravan holiday home. They aren't cheap but in 6 years I think I've only used the gas oven a couple of times because I can do everything in the Remoska.

The reason I want a slow cooker is I am sure it will work out cheaper than cooking in the oven which I do a lot - casseroles etc. I have an electric oven.

No they aren't cheap Ann but in a static caravan they are ideal because they use so little power and the cylinder gas is expensive. So we decided it would pay for itself pretty quickly.

Also if the caravan site is busy we are asked to keep our electricity consumption down or risk a power failure so the Remoska is handy.

Judging by your replies I must be the only one but couldn't get on with mine at all and sold it for £5 at boot sale. Everything was tasteless and needed extra thickening before it could be eaten so you couldn't just come home and eat. We ruined so many meals that we gave up!
Was obviously doing something wrong! Perhaps we should have persevered.

Ours is a large family sized one with removable pot, like me it's antique! Doesn't have it's own timer so plug it into one. Only uses same power as a light bulb. Make currys, casseroles etc in it. Ours had an instruction book with it and some recipes.
