BIG MISTAKE

suzian

suzian Report 9 Jan 2008 22:29

My mum was a headmistress at an infant school. I remember watching her supervising dinners among the young intake....

"Mrs xxxx, I don't like sprouts!

Eagle eyed stare from mum -

"In this school, xxxxx, we ALL like sprouts!

Small child shovels sprouts in like chocolate bars!

No need to raise even her voice, let alone her hand.

Unfortunately, I wasn't so gifted/patient - my daughter did indeed get the odd slap around the back of her knees.

In essence, I guess it's not what you do, it's whether you do it with obvious love or not. Kids pick up on this stuff (as do adults!)

HAD TO COLLECT ABOUT EIGHT SCHOOL RULERS FROM THE DESKS OF CLASS MATES WHICH WERE HELD TOGETHER BY MY MALE TEACHER AND WACKED OVER MY PALM. I WAS CAUGHT WRITING WORDS I WASNT SURE OF BEFORE A SPELLING TEST, ON THE DESK. IN PENCIL OF COURSE SO I COULD RUB THEM OUT LATER. I DARENT GO HOME AT LUNCH IN CASE MY MUM SAW MY RED HANDS AND I GOT ANOTHER SLAP.I WAS 9. NEVER PUT ANOTHER FOOT WRONG AGAIN. TAUGHT ME A LESSON.

Caned across the hand at primary school. Threatened with the belt at home by Dad if we misbehaved and sent by mum to the coal house which was about 6 foot square if my sister or I upset mum. That was when we were about 13 and 14. We had to stay in the coal house till Dad came home which could be as much as 2 hours later. We were never purposely late and dreaded her moods. Obviously in our interest to be well behaved as we didn't like the consequences. Needless to say have been very different with own children. No physical punishments and they have both turned out to be well behaved, caring adult sons.

thats beacuse you are a good parent.....they know where the 'mark' is and not to overstep it

I discipline my kids, I wont have them turning into asbo scum. Usually asking them to calm down does the trick as theyre good kids. Failing that, shouting that theres no tv for 3 days works wonders. On rare occasions they overstep the mark (like when my son didnt come home from school, was playing daft games with his friend in the street for 1 and a half hours in the freezing cold) he got a hiding the minute he got in. Id been out looking for him and even phoned the school. Knowing he was in trouble he lied he'd been helping the headmaster, daft sod! They get a lot of love and have mod cons in their rooms, new clothes, we have lots of laughs, et al...but woe betide if they think they can run wild. LOL.

My step father was so strict, I was too scared to misbehave, and retreated into a shell. On the rare occasions I did answer back or be stroppy, I got my legs slapped.

My great gran used to get thrashed with a horse whip as a child!! As did her 11 siblings. Their mum was only 4'6" so she probably wanted to make herself known!!

Oh no, please no falling out. It didn't occur to me to be upset by what Arch wrote, he didn't mean any harm.

like you say Tricia - pure Monty Python - Arch certainly didn't mean to upset anyone, just to lighten things a bit - please don't have a go at him folks. I used to get the cane in school regularly - for talking!! Often!

Arch I think that is from "The Four Yorkshiremen" Sketch ? you are right cmd by the Monty Pythons team very funny if you ever get the chance to look on you tube. Much better listened to on a cd in the car though. Comedy at its best.

at school,if we were late we had to stand in the centre aisle of the hall till the end of assembly
then go to your head of house for your punishment.
The lads usually got the ruler but the girls were given a printed paragraph about punctuality that you had to copy out 10 times.
one day when I went into mr Morris's office he just picked the printed page up and held it out to me,
I said,"it's ok sir I know it by heart"
His face was a picture, he picked the ruler up off his desk, stood up ,walked towards me---------------------then opened the door and said "go away,Paula,I give in"
I heard him chuckling to himself as I shut the door, just couldnt believe I'd got away with it.

arch, I have a good sense of humor, and would find your remarks amusing on the right sort of thread, but this one seems quite serious, and so you may wish to be a little more sensitive to others feelings.

My mum used to threaten to cut our tongues out and chase us round the house with a pair of scissors in her hand! Scared the h***l out of my sis but i knew she would't really do it.
