Hi Laura :)

I have just spotted your message on the Introduce Yourself Thread :):) I thought I might start a Thread here, Hope you dont mind :)

I have had a love of the West country for many years now, North Devon is a place I have visited many times, Barnstaple, Bideford, Ilfracombe, is normally our base for all round visits if we are staying longer then a few days, Sidmouth if we are down there for a weekend etc

On the Cornwall side we generally stay around St Austell way because its fairly easy to go in all directions from there :)

Aw thanks Colin thats really sweet!
out of interest where in Hampshire are you? my dad lives in Basingstoke, and I love it there.
Barnstaple is a good place to go shopping if you are in the area!

Anyone been to Okehampton?

Hi Laura :):)

Im as far down in Hampshire as you can go really without getting wet, right on the south coast in Gosport. I have water almost three quarters of the way around me a few minutes away on every side, although I cannot see it without going a few streets away :)

I have never actually stopped in Oakhampton itself although passed through :)

Barnstaple Panier Market I have visited a few times now , its a lovely place with a nice atmosphere about it :)

my hubby is a devonian from Teignmouth but not lived there for years and now his Gran has died we dont go down like we used to but he feels so 'at home' there.

His other grandparents were from Bovey Tracey so he knows that well too, last time we went down was just the two of us and had a lovely weekend in Bovey and Teignmouth he was like a little boy again.

If we ever get the chance are sure we will retire down there or if we win the lottery will buy a holiday place down there as well.

Mind you he was shocked when I found out his grans family were from Cornwall.

Hi Dawnie :):) Hi Ellan :):)

Dawnie :) A Devonian with Cornish Connections, you dont get more West Country then that :):)

It is certainly one of those places where I have always felt I belonged. It took me to find genealogy to find out I to had ancestors from Barnstaple way. I had always felt the connection but no one living today could make it fit :)

Hi Ellan :):)

The West country really is a beautiful place and I always feel so tranquil and at peace there in the surroundings. I have a certain respect though for those that live there because they have put up with so much over the years. As an outsider I walk in and take an enjoyment from the area although speaking to locals also try to understand if just a little of the harder times that they face each day. Those summer smiles can hide a winters worries so well.

We love Cornwall - off there at the end of Jan for a week. I like it out of season - lots of walks and a nice cosy cottage with a fire to come back to! Last year we were just outside Port Isaac, this time we're going near St Mawes on the south coast.

Hi Sheila :):)

I keep promising myself to spend more out of season time down that way. When I see places mentioned I suddenly realize more and more that I have seen so little of the place. Just the thought of coming back from a nice walk and sitting by that cosy fire sounds lovely :):)

Ellan, Laura :):) Without me being to nosey sorry, are you two pretty close to each other :) I have met a few people local to me through threads etc :) Its nice when it happens :)

Hi All,

Love the south west and spent many happy years in my village shop 6 miles from Helston and Colin know the Gosport and Pompey areas so well...Still & West in old Pompey before heading back to Queen Street for a 'meesy burger' from the van outside HMS Nelson's wardroom

I love Devon and Cornwall. Tony was born in Totnes, grew up in Buckfastleigh and went to school in Totnes. He left Devon when he joined the RN, We spent a lot of time in Buckfast in the 50s until 70s when his dad remarried (his Mum died in 1958), but we have always had lots of holidays in both Devon and Cornwall as we had friends who moved from Devon (Plympton) to Cornwall (St Austell) and back to Devon (Exmouth), and I have a cousin in St Austell (Porthpean actually). Every year when the children were young we had two weeks in St Austell. But we have stayed all over, more recently we stayed in Clowance Cornwall, St Mellion, Cornwall, Torquay Devon. Our friends moved out of Cornwall because it all became too commercialised and they wanted to be near their daughter who lives in Newton Abbott. But I miss staying in st Austell.
