Yes Colin, but I did it when I was on my own, after sitting down on my glasses they were in for repair, I saw what I thought was cobweb in corner of ceiling so got my binocs out, yes it was a cobweb.

Hi Gwyn, I can also hear better with my specs on but my hubby laughs at me and said it's not possible, thanks for proving me right.

I wear glasses too, in fact I have 2 different pairs, one for the computer and one for watching telly and reading. Can't see the computer with my telly ones and vice versa! My optician has tried to persuade me to try bi-focals or vari-focals, but prefer to stick to the 2 pairs.

A quick word of warning about contact lenses. My daughter has worn glasses since she was 4 years old. Used contact lens from 16 for about 7 years, then had a really bad ulcer on her eye, which the hospital blamed on the lenses. 16 months later the sight has not returned properly in her eye (it wasn't good to start with) and she has been offered a cornea transplant. She has decided against the transplant because it could take 2 years to "take" properly and then may not alter her eyesight that much anyway. She was always very careful with her lenses, but had been known to sleep in them occasionally. Please be warned!!

My glasses don't improve my hearing, but I still take them off when I answer the door and the phone!

Yes I do, since the age of 4, very short sited -18. From the age of 7 I wore contact lenses as they couldn't make the glasses strong enough. Problem is that glasses the stronger they get also make objects appear slightly smaller, contacts don't. I wore lenses for 34 years and never had a problem, no infection nothing. I was using hard and then gas permeable. You have to be careful with them, but I never went to bed in them, they would be all mucky after a few hours anyway.

Then a couple of years ago I had a double cataract operation, cataracts were starting because of my severe short site, both eyes done at the same time. I then needed reading glasses and driving glasses. Unfortunately severe short site is responsible for weak retinas and I was warned that there was an increased risk of a detachment, which happened earlier this year. Permanent damage to the left eye, but the right has been successfully treated. Only one more op to remove some scarring off the right eye is needed now, hopefully.

I wear varifocals and have for years, I have a special pair for VDUs with anti-glare coating cost £305.00, fortunately paid for by the company...

All my kids wear glasses/contacts and yes I get the blame for this! The defective sight gene..lol

Gwyn,

I am so glad you wrote that about being able to hear better with glasses on. So true.

I can't see distance but don't need glasses for computer and reading and stuff.... does that make me long sighted? anyway, I forget to put them on when getting up from the computer and can't see much, but fumble about anyway, lose confidence and hearing.

Theories why hearing 'improves' with specs

You are in a better situation to lip read
More attention can be focussed on hearing if you are not struggling with blurry visual messages
The arms make your ears stick out more and hence make better sound receivers, lol.

AnninGlos

AnninGlos Report 29 Dec 2007 15:20

Me, I wear varifocals. I also hear better with my glasses on, and if it is light. That is because I am hard of hearing (wear a hearing aid some of the time) and rely on subconsciously lip reading.

I wear mine from wake-up to bedtime. Tri-focals, with progressive midline. Frighteningly dependent on them!! Need a new Rx but the last pair cost over $300Cdn, so I've been putting it off, my health insurance only covers $120 every 2 years.

Only for reading, and TV. Otherwise can see better without them.

Poolie Girl could be right with number 3 theory, I never thought about it before but I have ears that are so flat to my head that the arms must surely stick mine out a bit.
