Fred Report 20 Dec 2007 22:23

For the third year running I am dreading Christmas Day.
Since I lost my wife the day has meant nothing at all to me.
Last year I stayed in bed until 2pm with only the noise from Heathrow Airport for company, watched a bit of TV and sank few brandies before returning to bed.
I have been reading the Chat Line for the last few months and there seems to be a great deal of togetherness amongst you all.
I just wondered if anybody will be on the chat line on Christmas Day to have a chat with.

Hi Fred

This will be my first Christmas without my OH. I don't know if I'll be here or not, but if I'm not, I'm sure others will be. Whatever, I'll be thinking about you and others in our situation.

I know my OH wouldn't want me to be miserable now he's gone - he never ever wanted me to be miserable any other time. whether I have the strength to do what he would've wanted, I don't know; what I do know, is that I'm going to have a bloody good try.

Take strength in the memories. They're a gift. Don't squander them under the quilt. Whether I'll be able to take advantage of my own advice only time will tell.........

Here's a hug.

Lol sue

(ps, why not try to get on one of those planes instead of listening to them? that's what I'm doing on Boxing Day)

Last Christmas I took all the net curtains down, cleaned the windows {both sides} painted the sitting room ceiling, put everything back, watched the wizard of Ox for the umpteenth time {there's no place like home} and made 2 boiled eggs and soldiers for dinner. No time for moping!!!

I do hope that this year will be a better one for you Fred.

Just a thought.......you know what it is like to have Christmas alone and you didn't enjoy that so, rather than repeat the experience, is there anyone you know who you could invite to share the day with you?

Could you perhaps volunteer to help people whose Christmas might be even more miserable? How about offering to spend some of the time at a homeless shelter or serving soup at a soup kitchen or something? I think if you can do something useful it might at least make your day feel worthwhile.

If not, then how about sorting some special treat for yourself? If you have a favourite spot out in the countryside perhaps you could go for a day out.....I know some people whose idea of a great Christmas day is turkey sandwiches up on Exmoor!

Whatever you decide, I do hope that this can be a better Christmas for you and perhaps future ones can be happy again.

I'll be around at some time Fred - wished you lived near me in Cardiff and you could spend Christmas with me - in fact if you fancy a trip to Wales [Cardiff] you can come and stay. Know just how you feel, lost my lovely husband five years ago and it ain't the same is it honey - don't care who comes for Christmas, the more the merrier - this is a genuine offer Fred - if you are interested, pm me and we can exchange details - do not want anyone to have to spend Christmas alone unless they wanted to that is!! Love Ann XX
