Corinne Report 9 Dec 2007 01:47

Hello,

My name is Corinne Gillespie and I am currently studying at The University of Derby, Buxton. I am studying BA Travel and Tourism. This semester I am studying a module called Research Methods and I have decided to conduct research into genealogy and tourism.

My question that I am asking is:
Are genealogists classed as tourists when travelling to conduct research?

I have decided to carry out research into this topic as for a year now I have been studying my own family tree which I find fascinating.

I was wondering if you would be able to complete a survey about genealogical tourism please? The survey is very short and will not take up much of your time. This will help towards my primary research and my portfolio. The link to the survey is:

http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=erm7wyvYZ73pa1v2cCip6A_3d_3d

I am interested in the views of professional genealogists and people who research their family tree as a hobby.
Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Regards,
Corinne Gillespie

Odd that this should be added in the middle of the night - you must be doing a year in the States or something.

Hi,

No I'm not doing a year in America.
I tend to be able to work better during the night, as there are less distractions than during the day.

Thank you for taking part in my research!

You would get better participation by adding during the day (UK time)

Well said Mick as do folk who work shifts or don't sleep all that much - we don't all live in a 8am-10pm world. Come on help the lady it took all of 30 seconds

I have just done the survey, but would have liked to add a comment.
I visited one of the ancestral villages in 1997 when I was touring England with my sister and her husband. I found my 3x gt grandparents grave. Unfortunately I hadnt gone as far into my ancestry at that stage as I have now and would love to go back (from New Zealand) but as a superannuitant I cant afford it :((
I have just received from a 3rd cousin a video of the Dilhorne church I visited, plus one at Cheadle which I now know as another ancestral one, and the one at Leigh in Staffs which I also now know as ancestral, but not quite so ancestral as the other two.
Now when I win lotto (flap, flap, oink, oink) I will definitely be a genealogical tourist.

Huia, wistfully thinking of all the places and people I want to visit.
