How about this guy who's just walked into a police station after he went missing over five years ago - remains of his canoe were found but no trace of him!

Maddiecow Report 3 Dec 2007 18:23

Well from I read Hazel he was classed as dead not missing.

Its not my area - so I dont know how long the law says you have to be missing for - didnt it used to be 8 years before you were classed as dead?

If its less now she could well have been paid out.

AnnCardiff Report 3 Dec 2007 18:25

perhaps there was a queue in the paper shop EB?

Don't suppose insurance could have been claimed until seven years were up I think that's the length of time before someone can be declared dead isn't it? His wife must be stunned - she sold the family home a few weeks back - wonder if she kept his clothes and other belongings and will they still have feelings for each other? What a strange position to find yourself in - and his children too!

Janette Report 3 Dec 2007 21:55

It's 7 years before you can be classed as dead without a body, unless the coroner signs the death cert when there is no doubt that you have been lost at sea.

My friends brother went down with the gora lass fishing boat 10 years ago, because the other 2 were found the coroner signed his death cert after 12 months.

If I was his wife I would want to kill him

Thanks for clearing that up Jan - so its highly unlikely she claimed.

Wasnt there a story last year about a piano man that was just looking for publicity?

Who knows maybe he was nicked and never wanted to tell his family - people do strange things - but stranger still walking into a police station - I will wait for this story to unfold...
