Hi All

Today I was sorting out stuff and picked up my old teddy called Zooney (after the alien on fireball XL5 - er not that I remember that show) and thought he needed some big time nip tuck an botox at the age of 44!

Have you still got a teddy from childhood? or any other treasured toy? and how old are they?

Ted was made by my Aunt for my First Christmas... 1949. Poor ted is nearly bald, has lovely red velvet on the soles of his feet & palms... velvet was from my first evening dress!

Hi Rosi and Carol
I felt so sorry for my poor threadbare bear - is your doll in good condition Rosi?

Carol your Ted sounds lovely and must be 58 now, that is so special having velvet from your dress - mine has suede paws!

there was a pair of Teddys on antiques roadshow last night. And the lady who had them had a photo of her grandmother and great aunt cuddling them as kids. Think she was told they were worth £2000. Probably worth more in sentimental value.
I have my walking doll which is 40 years old. She doesnt walk but just rocks from side to side now as I seem to have lost hershoes with the foam lining which enabled her to shuffle forward..lol

Susie Bear is older than me.

Dad bought her for Mum quite a while before I was born and she became mine. She was born around 1949 and is still doing quite well, although she no longer growls and is a bit "patchy".

A friend presented me with a Teddy Bear in 1956 whilst at the cinema to see a film in which Elvis sang that very song. I previously had one from the 40s but he sadly met his demise

I have a Teddy called Scotty. He's 44 and doesn't have a body any longer, just a head. The boy next door tore him in half when I was twelve and threw the body down the drain.

I still love him though!

*Scotty.................not the ratty boy next door*

Deb:)

P.S Shy elf........Wonder what it is about teddys being destroyed when we were twelve?

I have my grandad's teddy. He was born in 1900. He sleeps in a sewing box that my grandad made for his sister, who was born in 1890. I think the box was made in WW2. The bear has a new cover made by my grandad's mother, so it isn't really that new!

Spivvy, my knitted teddy was bought for my first Christmas when I was 6 months old......he will be 6l on Christmas Day.......he has no arms because Dad and I used to have a tug of war with him, and I lost the arms......threadbare, but still loved.....

He doesn't want any titles, as he considers himself a Peasant bear.....lol

I have Tigger

Hes a teddy with red arms and legs, a striped black, red and cream body and back of head, and a cream face. He has a red bump on the top of his head (dont know why lol )

he used to squeek when you pressed his tummy but now its worn out. He is also threadbare with love.
One of his eyes broke some time back so he is now a very sad but loved old bear.

I got him when I was about 2. That makes him almost 40 years old. Hes watched me grow up...bless :o)))

My sister has mum's old bear.................now about 73 years old.

Very threadbare and with odd buttons for eyes, but he was clearly very well loved once.

I have a stuffed scottie dog called Mackintosh. My gran gave him to me when I was about 8... he was hers, she was born in 1905... so I suspect he is pretty old.

It broke my heart when I went home and found my Teddy had gone. (Mum said his stuffing was coming out and he had to go). So a while ago while feeling nostalgic I looked on ebay and that is how my hobby started collecting teddy bears. I only had an old photo of teddy so took me a while to fugure out what make he was I now think he was a Chad Valley. So now I have mostly Chad Valley bears dating for the 1950's and earlier.
We still have my Sons fisrt ted he will be 36 this Christmas and my daughters 33 also a treasuerd doll of my daughters she will be about 25 this years ( doll that is :-))
If anyone is interested and wants to clean there old bear this is the way I do it. I have had some come in a right old dirty state but they look lovely when they get cleaned up.

Get two bowls of warm not hot water
A Sponge
A toothbrush.
A soft nail or hair brush
Two towels.
Bear cleaning or mild baby shampoo. (There is a good product on eBay that brings them up lovely though it isn’t cheap)
Hair dryer
Make a froth of solution in a bowl (like you see when they clean carpets) (mixing a small amount of shampoo in one bowl and making a froth)
Lay teddy on one towel
Put some of the foam on the tooth brush and brush into teddy very gently doing a small amount at a time.
Rinse with the sponge dipped in the fresh water.
Lightly towel dry then gently dry with hair dryer (not hot) while gently brushing with a soft hair or nail brush.
Do this in small stages a little bit of teddy at a time till he is all nice and clean then leave him to fully dry off.
Never over wet teddy and always be gentle otherwise he may lose some of his fur which we don’t want.

my lovely Ted was given to me whe I was born in June 1936 - he's a Chad Valley, his growl has gone, along with most of his fur but never ever would I part with him - very much loved. So, seventy one and a half years old - anyone top that?

AnnCardiff Report 3 Dec 2007 09:04
