Easter Bunny

Easter Bunny Report 10 Nov 2007 20:44

I remember playing tennis where we quickly latched on to the fact that if we lobbed the ball over the fence into the park next to our school, the teacher sent us to look for it ----which meant a pleasant stroll in the sunshine, chatting to your mate just long enough for the lesson to be over, when you would "suddenly"spot the tennis ball lying in the grass lol

Gwyn,
Ditto for decor apart from the bottom of ours was shiny red.
Also the stairs were painted red and we all said it was because a girl had fell down the stairs and died when the school first opened (1910).
Our school and the infants had Bell towers on the roof, apparently the juniors was haunted by the headless horseman and the infants by the gray lady, or it might have been the other way around. Needless to say they never made an appearence but we still managed to scare ourselves silly. lol

Forgot to mention the colour scheme fixed in my mind.
Brickwork was painted in heavy gloss....dirty pea green from floor to about 4 feet level, then one brick width of black before walls of buttermilk cream rose to the lofty ceilings.

In Junior school, leaning out of the sash windows and shouting and then ducking in so you couldn't be seen (some lads would spit but I was a good girl!). Being referred to as "You, Girl!" and not thinking it was strange.
Senior school, I remember playing hockey and Netball outside when the lads had the Gym and the sports hall all the time, just because the female PE teachers wouldn't stand up to the male ones.

Outside PE lessons with just a thin woven mat to sit on.
Wet roller towels that seemed to be there for days.Paintbrush monitors weren't always too careful about washing and drying the brushes. I was at primary school when paper towels were introduced but mindful of the cost the teachers appointed monitors who stood guard to make sure that we only took one towel.
Nature study lessons with Miss Wing, who had various pickled animals in jars as 'helpful' exhibits.

On a brighter note....Singing Together with radio broadcasts, ....I still remember some of the songs.
We also joined in with a Radio broadcast assembly once a week.

Chalk squealing on blackboards. Cod liver oil capsules and a spoonful of malt. The horrors of PE and Sports Day. Pig Bins.

Playing The Big Ship Sails on the Alley Alley Ooo, skipping games (Ice Cream Penny a Lump the More you Eat the Higher you Jump!), also two balls.

Being bullied at Secondary school until one day I thumped the gang leader after 6 months of putting up with mental torture from her and her cronies...(I'm still waiting for her to turn up on Friends Reunited)!

morning announcments over the PA and our principal was keen on a certain singing group . He always started the morning by playing this record very loudly then would break in at the end of a song with his news etc. Anyone ever hear of the "Singing Nuns". Hope I never hear them again. lol. Wasn't even a Catholic school

jammy dodgers,potato puffs,
getting the strap, fighting in playground.school dinners
loved em. Mrs Shannon who use to spray you in the face when she spoke to you. Miss Wallace who had huge breasts and I was going through puberty telling me when I spoke to her to look her in the face, instead of looking at her breasts.

The cane, got it twice at primary school once aged 7 and then aged 10, both for pushing and shoving someone.

School dinners = the pervading smell of cheese pie is still here today.and the nit nurse, yes

Frozen milk which we hated. Egg and spoon races at sports day.

I remember the smell of powder paint too, and we had after school country dancing in the last year of primary where we fancied the girls but never had the courage to say we did.

Funnily enough I have been in contact with three of the girls through Friends Reunited after more than 40 years.....!

Something else I have just remembered.

I was brought up in West London where the majority of students misguidedly supported QPR.

During school assemblies I vividly recall them singing QPR in place of Kumbaya lol xx

I remember a daily assembly where we sung hymns and the headmaster would address the whole school, gigling or passing wind was a total no no, and could get you the ruler over the knuckles, ha ha do these things still take place? It was fun.

remember too, Whale meat on the School dinner menu in the late 1940,s was horrendous very tough, very oily ,and not at all edible altho we were expected to eat it. Many a portion secreted away from the dining room tucked up in the leg of navy bloomers!!

Wish they still had the nit nurse in schools. I am sick of mothers who leave their kids with them to reinfest everyone elses. GGRRRRRRRR.

I remember from Junior and primary school:

Lumpy mashed potato served with an icecream scoop

Making a fluffy bobble using a cardboard doughnut template and wool.

Ooo and last but not least *the kissing hill*.lol xx
