hi
My 3ggrandfather was George Savory of Chilvers Coton he was a boatman ,
he was born 1812 and died 1843 ,and his occ listed on death cert was boatman .

My 4xgreat and 3xgreat grandfathers (Zacharia and Thomas Greenhough) worked on Cromford Canal in Derbyshire, the story is that it was when people could only sign a 'x' for their wages but my two ancestors were the only ones who could sign their names.

I have three generations of canal boatmen in my tree who worked on the Forth and Clyde canal. Name was Broadley.

I do and one family is a pain to find! my gggreatgrandfather Thomas Hurtley was a boatman on the canal in Silsden, yorks i cant find the family after the 41 census.
his daughter, my ggreatgrandma, married into another boatpeople family, the Cooks from Burnley, lancs i guess they knew each other from working the leeds liverpool canal.

hii gill some of the stories are very sad but its good to know that in the war these people plodded on no matter what delivering the coal for people and food:)

Yes I have one William Proctor and he married a boatmans daughter in 1906 Eliza Blunn, There daughter told a family member as a child she had to be tied to the boat incase she fell overboard.
