Just got a small loaf of bread, and it was 75p, and I thought that's 15 shillings and that's a, ten bob note and 2 half a crowns. I remeber when bread was 1/11d thats not 10p. What has the world come to :)))) |

Must admit that I do same as you Lynda, and while I am staggered by prices find it strange that kids don't think the same way - they have no qualms about paying what appears to you and I very high price for the most inane thing, that when we see it and convert back are horrified. Even pocket money I remember as being 6d (if the rent man could be avoided that week !) but now children want minimum of £5. |

I was 10 when we went over to decimal coinage and I still convert back to £sd sometimes. 18/- sounds so much more than 90p doesn't it? |

£ is symbol for the pound - really an icon representing L for Libra - pound d is symbol for denari - though usually referred to as penny. |

Thanks , so that means I used to get 240 Denarii in a Libra . Now I get 100 pence in a pound ? What happened to the other 140 Denarii when we went Decimal then ??? Think my bank works with LSD when applying interest to my overdraft ...lol xxxx |

I convert back all the time Lynda - cant help myself - I find it hard to equate a bag of Smiths Crisps (6d I think the top cost was) with a packet now costing 38p. or thereabouts! Eh by gum....those were the days eh? fags were 2p for 20.........a pint was 1/- ..........................and we bathed in front of the fire, with the loo down the garden )))) Jac |

I bet if we went back to £.s.d for a week, we would realise just how much we were being ripped off by everyone. By the way Polly:)) I used to get four chews for a penny, so that was a farthing each, no equivalent now is there? |
