I was a teenager in the 60's and everything was perfect. Just the right age to be in the 60's, for fashion, Bands, boyfriends and generally enjoying life. LLx |

I remember my 10th birthday in 1969. I got some money sent to me for my birthday, and feeling grown up now I was in double figures I went to the shop to spend it. Mum was at work in the local hardware shop adn Dad was a lorry driver. I bought a pair of stockings so I could be like my mum. When I got them home, feeling really chuffed, I looked in mums drawer for her suspender belt and tried putting the stockings on. I could not figure out how this suspender belt went, there only seemed to be 2 hooks on it, I thought there were 4! Mum got home and found me crying and I told her what had happened. She got the giggles when I showed her the 'suspenders'. It was only her Dr Whites Sanitary belt! |

I was a kid then but will never forget all the things our residents' association organised. The whole street would pile into a fleet of coaches and spend the day at the seaside. Somebody was always sick on the coach getting there. You could still have your photo taken with a weenie monkey on your shoulder at some piers! The Summers seemed warm all the time and it used to snow properly in Winter. The infant school stayed open even when the heating broke down but we were allowed to keep our coats and gloves on in class as it was so cold. We'd rush home to push our sledges along the pavements. At Xmas all the kids would be taken to a panto at the London Palladium. Arthur Askey was usually the star actor! In Summer, we'd go to the allotments to collect caterpillers and put them into jam-jars and match boxes. I was given tuppence for this and remember spending it on loads of sweets. |

Mary Quant clothes and matching black and white plastic earrings (clipped over my pierced ears). Levis with braces, ben sherman shirts, obligatory for us mods of either sex. Parkas trimmed with fur, full length leather coats which you had to trample all over so they didn't look new. TOTP and juke box cafes. Billy Graham evangelising in London. Jublees (sp) blasted things were prone to leap out of the strange triangular carton when they were 'squeezed up' to lick! Marquee club in London, complete with fire hazard decorations. Seeing the Beatles in 1964. Silver studs which we used to put in our school bags spelling out name of latest boyfriend. Only on one side of bag so it could be hidden from the teaching staff. Just too much to add here. Sue |
