Hi Susie, fancy finding you here. My mother's family, the Williams, come from Abingdon which used to be in Berks but in now Oxon. Got a line going back to Tudor times. I also have Watts conections there. Wish they would not mess with county boundaries. Len

PinkDiana Report 26 Jan 2004 13:51

That changing of boundary really did catch us out didn't it!!! As for relics in Newbury..... I moved there as I got married last year to find I have an aunt and a cousin living within 5 minutes of my house!! How cool?

Helen in Berkshire

Helen in Berkshire Report 26 Jan 2004 15:25

Hello everyone Lovely to find other people on GC from Berkshire - I was beginning to think I was about the only one! I have been living in Maidenhead for the past 20-odd years although I started out life in West Wickham, Kent. Unfortunately most of my 'rellies' are from East London/Huntingdon/Northumberland and Durham. I have one solitary ancestor (Tull) from E. London who I think married a girl from Reading - haven't followed it up yet! Helen

Glad to meet you all...... anyone fancy getting together sometime? I am happy to have the first meeting in my house if that helps or we could pick a pub in Reading which seems to be the central point? Dee

Hi Dee, That would be a great idea for all Berkshire Crew to meet, but I don't think I could make it living in Perth W>A. I am new on the GE, so alot to learn & little bits of news etc. is great I love it. May need a little help with a few things in trying to trace family etc. We are having very hot weather here in Perth, guess yours is freezing cold & snow expected, am I right. Bye for now Rita.

Hello Dee Looks like there aren't too many of us, but it would be nice to meet up. I agree Reading sounds like a good mid-point, although I don't like driving there because of the one-way systems (I get lost!). However, I'm happy to get the train if you know of any good pubs - (I might combine a meeting with a trip to the Records Office as well). Regards Helen

Well I'm in Albany West Australia. grew up in Crowthorne, worked at Maidenhead Hospital. Met my husband in Maidenhead and lived there till 1974 when we came out to OZ. My sister still lives in Bracknell.

Helen in Berkshire Report 4 Feb 2004 10:23

Hi Janet Good to find another honorary Maidonian! I've only lived there since 1981 so our paths never crossed, but Maidenhead has certainly changed over the years. The hospital is still there, but for Accident & Emergency services the choice now is between Wycombe General or Wexham Park in Slough - a long drive either way. Regards Helen

Hi, my Smith side of the family came from Speen, nr Newbury. My G-grandfather joined the army and eventually settled in Dorset. I was born in Durham City myself, and now work in London. I class myself as a Berkshire person although somewhat distantly!! Marcus
