Paul, it is a lovely place. I hope to fish the upper Ouse in the summer if my hip is up to it.

one last comment for Dave You're quite right that religion is a personal thing, and I hope that Gaynor gets some strength (of which she has plenty already) from whatever her beliefs are. What I dont think is right to mock people who don't believe the same thing as you do - I don't mock Christians for for their beliefs, so its' unfair to mock Andy for his.

I gain the impression that you are upset or angry, Andy. I am very sorry. I don't know what a god botherer is, I am just an ordinary person. wishing you all well, :) Joy

have fished the Ouse in many spots when I was a lad (since I live in Milton Keynes) - not been for many years though. Favourite spot was at Ravenstone Mill (Beds), some huge Barbel there (not that I ever caught any - not there anyway).

Joy! Angry? Upset? I hope just injecting some life and personal interest into these boards!

Paul Just what I would have liked to say, but of course you say it far better than I could. I am content with my choices, as everyone should be BUT more importantly I also feel I am tolerant of people no matter what their beliefs are, in the end really it is none of my business what others choose. Tolerance is far more important. Thank you Andy for posting this, I enjoyed it. Respect Pat x

perhaps "God botherers" was a poor choice of words Andy lol

Joy

Joy Report 3 Feb 2005 21:33

Oh dear, I can see that there has been some awkwardness and am sorry about that. However, I feel that I must just say one thing about "All you god botherers please be assured that some of us do not need it, we can be more happy than you without your god and your afterlife." I do not think that I could categorically state that I can be more happy than another person for whatever reason. I don't think so. in friendship, Joy

A lot of the Christmas traditions are nothing whatever to do with Christmas - cards, tree, stockings, etc. I do these things although I am not religious, because they are fun for the children. I also believe that celebrating the winter solstice is a way of welcoming some light and colour into a drab and dreary season and trying to feel hopeful about the coming spring. There are many faiths which celebrate rebirth and have their own festivals of light. nell

I'm sure many non-christians clelebrate Christian Festivals, the same way many many Catholics set off, or go to watch, fireworks on November 5th - purely to have a good time LOL Although I have to admit I had my December bash on 21st last year (pure logistics - but I preferred it LOL) maggie

what does it matter who does what??..if you enjoy it go for it whatever you wish to call it..it if we all thought the samethoughts and followed the same beliefs it'd be a bit boring would it not??

Joy Report 3 Feb 2005 22:43

To me, Christmas is *still* based on celebrating and commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ. in friendship, Joy

Greg

Greg Report 3 Feb 2005 22:51

We clearly know that christ wasn't born on 25th Dec (or in Dec). This was a holiday long before christianity came to the forefront. We should all just celebrate it together as a holiday.. Talking of which, I wonder if since the Jews, Christians, and Islamic's worship the same god, they go to the same heaven.. And if so, if they fight as much up there?

Unknown

Unknown Report 3 Feb 2005 23:08

Sorry Greg but I'm in complete ignorance - how do we know Jesus wasn't born at Christmas?

Greg

Greg Report 3 Feb 2005 23:11

Winter sleeping patterns and sheep!

Unknown Report 3 Feb 2005 23:12

David, I think it's pretty well documented that the date was picked out for other reasons... I dont know the details, but I do recall reding it (sorry, not very helpful I know !)

Greg

Greg Report 3 Feb 2005 23:13

Sorry, to be more specific, Dec is very cold to be in the fields in winter, and shepherds "watched the flocks" generally during lambing season....

Thanks Greg and Paul - wasn't challenging it just interested - so is it mostly supposition based on likelihood?
