Um let me see - quite a few things really. Bees and wasps Anything medical - so imagine how I've felt the last few years. One minor and 2 major operations and now more health worries. I am permanatly in a state of nervous exhaustion. I just wish I could find someone else who was the same! Can't even think of a reason why I'm like this. Just the way I was made I suppose! Jane

Katz, what you put describes my phobia exactly! God only knows what started it, but it's been a lifelong thing (I'm now 48). I feel so ashamed that I can't deal with my children when they're sick - hubby deals with them. I can deal with the animals when they're sick, but humans ....... no. However, it sounds stupid really, but somebody could have blood pouring out of them and I could deal with it. From a very embarrassed Glenys.

It's not really a phobia as it doesn't affect my life very much, but I'm very scared of large, ENCLOSED, empty spaces, e.g. an empty aircraft hangar would freak me out, as do some of those large greenhouses! Also, don't like empty swimming pools - weird I know!

Glenys, you're better than me because couldn't even cope with animals being sick - just as bad. I have improved slighty (think this one entitles me to the worst mother ever thread!!) but when kids were sick, I couldn't even be in the bathroom with them, used to stand outside and talk to them through the door (no hubby unfortunately as he went off with someone else) and wouldn't kiss them or let them kiss me incase I caught it - that's really awful isn't it. The thought of dealing with my sick child now still sends me in a state but I can now deal with it - even in the same room - though with a scarf tied around my face!! - and they get cuddles and kisses. Even though they're poorly they find the scarf thing quite amusing!!. I'm not always such a monster - honest! Hate seeing it on TV as well which is difficult as I like ER and Casualty - most of the time you can tell when one of the characters are likely to be ill so I have my finger on the remote and flick over at the first sign - it's the surprise one's that annoy me - you know gone in because of ingrowing toenail and suddenly sick - now where did that come from?? and was it necessary?? Think I've rambled enough for now. Kxx

Matches and lighters. Spiders are OK as long as they are outside. Heights I can just about cope with, snakes no problem not keen on lizards or frogs. Do suffer from claustrophobia and also meeting strangers, once I get to know someone I'm OK, but going to new places can set me on edge. I don't have children so don't have to deal with them being ill and touch wood not been ill myself for years. Not squemish at the sight of blood as long as it's not mine. Ros

Thanks for replying Katz, and it's so heartening to know that there are others out there who feel like I do. You're not a monster mother - but I know how you feel. There have been one or two unusual phobias - any others?

Glenys, not really a phobia and not unusual. But dentists - but that's linked to my main phobia. when I was young I was made to have something called fluoride (sp??) treatment which made me sick - so I cant stand dentists as feel really sick at the thought of them. My teeth are a real state. My ex takes the kids to the dentist for me so that's something. It is good to know that you're not the only one who feels like this. A lot of phobias sound really odd, but you cant help how you feel and it's very real to the person who's suffering from it. All the best (and here's to an illness ((as much as possible)) free future). Kxx

Yes Katz, that sounds quite unpleasant. I have a joke about dentists, though (male, that is). What do you do at the dentists before he starts the treatment? You put your hand up his smock and say 'Now, we're not going to hurt eachother, are we!' I'm not making fun at your expense, but someone told me that once and it's stuck! Anyway K, you take care now, Glenys x P.S. If there are any male dentists on here - sorry!

I've been agoraphobic 3 times. I'm not now and I have no idea how I managed to get over it but I've been fine for years now. This all started with panic attacks when I'd had my son. I still have the odd little moment but thats all it is, I doubt I'd ever get that bad again. Maria

I've got lots of phobias and fears but the overriding ones are - death, flying, wasps and dentists so my absolute nightmare scenario would be - being in a dentists chair at 30,000ft on a plane with a wasp flying around the cabin then the pilot announcing 'please assume crash position ladies and gentlemen...... and these fears DO interfere with my life!
