I work in I.T as a Business Systems Design Analyst. Working probably 85% of the time from home, some say how good that is!! but I find I feel cut off from people/life and quite often just get in the car and drive somewhere..anywhere.. just to get interaction after hours of looking at a screen. I tend to work about 15 hours a day.. minimum, and till all hours of the morning. I like the job though i have been made redundant 3 times whilst working in the I.T Industry. At the end of the day.. It's a job. But if i could choose .. I would love to be a park ranger in the wilds of Canada or the USA. ... now ya talkin!! ;-)

I used to love my job, but i bloody hate it now. I used to be the Buyer and then when i eventually got promoted to Purchasing manager (after 8 years), they decided that they didn't need a buying department and moved me into Sales. My boss is the biggest pillock in the world......oh, and he supports Arsenal. c x

Don't be like me stuck in a dead end job that i don't mind it's just the people I work with I hate. Hope to be getting out of this job in next 2 months. Sue

Jack I work in a school - used to work as a librarian for a large charity, got v. fed up with the office politics. The main perk of my job now is that I work 1:1 or with small groups of children some of the time, which is sometimes rewarding and sometimes frustrating. I also work term-time which means I get the school holidays which is a big plus. But I am getting disillusioned and would also like something that paid better. But I also want a day off a week to go to records offices!!!!!!! Good luck with your application! nell

Hi Jack Like Nell, I work in a school - as the Administrator. The downside is obviously the pay, but the holidays and fitting it round your children certainly makes up for it. I've been in the job for 12 years now, and despite being diagnosed with ME, was determined to keep going as I thought that it would be good for me to have company and something to keep my brain ticking over. I love the job - because of the enormous variety of tasks, no two days are ever the same .. and now there's a great big 'BUT' coming. Due to financial constraints, plus the recent Government initiative to give teachers a proper 'work/life balance', the school can't afford to take on an additional member of admin staff. I haven't had a lunch break for at least 5 years because I hate the thought of going home at the end of the day with work still outstanding. I've now been off work sick for 7 weeks and continuing. I just can't cope with the huge amount of work being generated for me, and until I was signed off, I hadn't had a proper night's sleep for 3 months. The ME has been compounded by depression and anxiety, and I feel a complete failure for not being able to cope with the job any more (even though deep down I know it's not really my fault). Sorry Jack - but you did ask lol! My SIL retrained as a Social Worker and qualified two years ago - she loves the job and get immense job satisfaction. Just before Christmas, my brother gave up 18 years of lorry driving to become a carer for adults with learning difficulties - and his face lights up when he talks about his job (in fact, he even says it doesn't feel like 'work'!). Go for it - and I wish you every success! Mandy :)

I meet nice people- the clients I think are going to be difficult when I meet them first of all I drop quickly.I don't need them. If you want to change tracks you have to be prepared to go for it.I studied part time to get my qualifications Rose

Lady on Lynchmere Common

Lady on Lynchmere Common Report 27 Apr 2005 18:21

Jack I had/have the best job in the world in the world but a month ago realised that I had spent 10 years listening to colleagues whinging and whining. At a meeting where they were still going on after 2 1/2 hours, I thought I have had enough!. For the next week I thought about my options, to stay in a well paid but negative atmosphere, or jump off the cliff and join my partner in his IT security awareness business, knowing a/ he has too much work to cope with on his own and b/ there is not enough to pay me much, if anything, yet. I talked about it with him and was told in no uncertain terms it was my decision to make and not one he was going to make for me. I gave my notice in 2 days later and feel like the weight of the world has been lifted. I came home that day to a huge bunch of flowers thanking me for 'jumping off the cliff' and making the decision on my own. Our standard of life may change in the short term, but the knowledge that I will be working for 'us' and having a better working environment out weighs that. I'm on my last 2 days of notice period and am breaking my neck to be free. Every time I think about what I am doing a smile comes over me. That feeling on it's own is worth the jump! Deborah
