I think it's very disrespectful to highlight other people's little weaknesses. Stones and glass houses spring to mind. We all make mistakes from time to time. So what! This is not an examination is it, we're chatting for goodness sake. Jan :-))

Hi, I noticed a few of you spelt Grammar , Grammer, which is correct please as I always thought it was Grammar. Or is it one of those words where you can use both, like Grey and Gray?? AL

As many on here have already pointed out, spelling may not be some ones strong piont, so rather than put them ill at ease, we all write how we feel comfortable, that way no one knows who has the spelling promblems, also a lot of people feel that any comunication is better than none at all, live and let live is my motto, if you want to write your words in full then go ahead and give others the option to write in short if they so wish, all coments on a thread are welcome, whatever the spelling. Bev short for Beverley (which I do not like so much)

Hi Mandy, Thank you for saying that. I had this sudden horror that people would think that I was always taking the thingie. Gwynne x

Hi Mandy, My spelling and grammar are usually fairly precise and I'm not taking the p***. Dad was an English teacher and I was also a teacher and spent a lot of time correcting poor grammar and spelling. I do think spelling and grammar matter but that's my choice. I wouldn't dream of imposing it on others who post on the boards. If I can't understand a message I move on. I hate text speak. I'm not telling people they shouldn't use it - just expressing an opinion. Young people I work with always text me using reasonable English as they know they won't get an answer if they don't. These are young people who are not dyslexic. In that case text speak would be fine. Gwynne

Viv - it is normally considered to be very bad manners to criticise a person's spelling in these circumstances.

On this board which is a lot of fun I don't have a problem because if I don't understand it I pass on. The problem comes on the tips board where I would truly like to help people but have great difficulty reading some of the requests. I can't type & that little bit has taken me about eight minutes but I do try to check it over before I press the send button. I'm also not computer literate & haven't got to grips with the spell checker so I keep a dictionary by me. Being an old fogey the main thing that upsets me is names without capitals. To my way of thinking that is disrespectful & a capital letter makes the names stand out better. Vivienne

Viv - the sentence :' Or is it they can't spell?' is a question appertaining to nothing that had gone before it. Having a thread criticising spelling is absolutely fine as long as the correct grammar is used to construct the initial post. ;-)

Starting a sentence with a question apropos of nothing may be considered poor form by pedants as well.
