Or is it they can't spell? or just too lazy to type it correctly? for example: 'Gonna' and 'Wanna' And this one : 'Rellie's' ? which is used quite often, what are they ? |

as long as we can get the drift of what the person is saying I cant really see what the problem is. Remember on here is a rich tapestry of people, many who have writing/spelling difficulties. Our ways of writing are all different and as long as we dont upset others I cant see why U R worrying. Elaine x |

Thanks ! John, Dave and Sue, I am glad I am not the only one ! and Sue, its not that you are an old fogey like me ! I believe that children learn by example, so why not tell your granddaughter to use the word 'Bye' instead. |

Perhaps we should not use 'contractions' either! I am not the best speller in the world and my grammer is pretty poor as well but, if I spot a mistake by some one else I would not dream of commenting about it. Viv |

Starting a sentence with a question apropos of nothing may be considered poor form by pedants as well. |

Viv - the sentence :' Or is it they can't spell?' is a question appertaining to nothing that had gone before it. Having a thread criticising spelling is absolutely fine as long as the correct grammar is used to construct the initial post. ;-) |

On this board which is a lot of fun I don't have a problem because if I don't understand it I pass on. The problem comes on the tips board where I would truly like to help people but have great difficulty reading some of the requests. I can't type & that little bit has taken me about eight minutes but I do try to check it over before I press the send button. I'm also not computer literate & haven't got to grips with the spell checker so I keep a dictionary by me. Being an old fogey the main thing that upsets me is names without capitals. To my way of thinking that is disrespectful & a capital letter makes the names stand out better. Vivienne |

Viv - it is normally considered to be very bad manners to criticise a person's spelling in these circumstances. |

Hi Mandy, My spelling and grammar are usually fairly precise and I'm not taking the p***. Dad was an English teacher and I was also a teacher and spent a lot of time correcting poor grammar and spelling. I do think spelling and grammar matter but that's my choice. I wouldn't dream of imposing it on others who post on the boards. If I can't understand a message I move on. I hate text speak. I'm not telling people they shouldn't use it - just expressing an opinion. Young people I work with always text me using reasonable English as they know they won't get an answer if they don't. These are young people who are not dyslexic. In that case text speak would be fine. Gwynne |
