Cook has always washed the dishes by hand. Dad has always said electronic dishwashers add a fair bit to your water bill. (Not to mention the risk of electrocution :-) Do you have one and if so, would you ever go back to manual cleaning?

A couple of these replies are rather sexist. Cook would disapprove she saw them.

I have a dishwasher and two little elves (my sons) who empty it. I don't know how much water they use, but like most electrical appliances they come with energy ratings now, and there are economy and quick/half load wash cycles. I know that they can wash much more thoroughly than me, at higher temperatures than my hands can stand. Not all things can be washed in a dishwasher though - wooden spoons, bonehandles, etc and delicate crockery. First one was bought when we lived in our old house and had a new kitchen fitted. I'd taken all the kitchen stuff out of the kitchen while it was done. When it was finished, I put everything I could through the dishwasher before putting it away - the glasses were gleaming, the plates shiny. I could manage - just - without a fridge/freezer, oven, microwave, but I would go mad without my dishwasher and my washing machine. nell

I have three they take it in turns to wash, dry and put away. They are my children and they do very little else here so I would not want to buy a machine as they may miss it, as it has become a good habit to them. lol. Pat x

Neeta and Maz that is my problem with dishwasher I don't want to buy one as I bet once I get used to them I would not be able to do without. May wait until I haven't got the trio to do the chore, don't think I will resort to paper plates though Maz lol. Pat x
