GR have asked that I only have 1 thread so this will be it for this month..... Anyone wanna help me organise some balloon release's? The idea will be for an area to release upto 1000 balloons and we will have a prize for the one that travels the furthest for each area! CRUK will supply the balloons and the balloon labels, but you will need to supply the helium and collect the £1 per balloon. (the cost of the helium can come out of the funds raised altho some companies may let you have it free as its for CRUK) - just add your name below if you think you can and I will be in touch. B&Q are offering us dates to do collections there so if you can spare a few hours on 1st and/or 2nd Oct please let me know and I will put you in touch with the right people! I've just banked over £5000 for CRUK so we are at £15k+ now!! :O) Does anyone want to sell some greeting cards? I was thinking about at meets.... they are CRUK supplied and are 99p each

When are you thinking of doing this Pink?

PinkDiana

PinkDiana Report 6 Jun 2005 16:37

I was thinking September time to give people loads of time to organise and schools are back so they can get involved too!! Would that be reasonable?

Not sure how to organise something like this as an independant event. I was thinking that the association [Som LI] that I belong to has a marquee in the VE/VJ celebrations in Vivary Park Taunton & I might have been able to do something there. I'll think about it, my boss is well into Rotary, maybe he would have some ideas. Vivienne

Mandy.... No council approval isn't necessary for any upto 1000 and I will supply the letters of authorisation for any venues etc.

PinkDiana

PinkDiana Report 6 Jun 2005 17:20

Vivienne..... if you wanna do one at that we can organise it.... just let me know!

Sheila thanks for that info but infact its not all correct!! As I would not like The Pink Fund for Cancer Research UK to be involved with anything illegal, I spoke to CRUK first before suggesting this on the boards and they have already advised on the legal side of things and obviously they do nothing that is against the law!! All balloons and labels would be supplied by CRUK and therefore comply with all legal stipulations of being biodegradable and in fact airports only need informing if 1000+ are being released! Therefore also the 28 day stipulation does not come into play either! I am happy to ditch a mass balloon race if people don't think its a good idea but I will be doing my own hopefully at my company if anyone would like to participate! Diana

The primary school where I work as Administrator has held several balloon releases in the past, usually selling around 400 balloons. However, we had to stop these releases as our local council would not allow them - even the number of balloons didn't come into it, we just couldn't have them at all because the balloons and labels weren't biodegradable. Perhaps it actually varies from council to council? It would obviously be best for people interested in participating in this to check with their own local council's byelaws. Mandy :)

Not meaning to sound nasty or anything but would it not be easier and better for the environment if people were just to add the money to a charity box. that way they can still give something but does not cause all the hassle everywhere. in my mind if the charity supplies the balloons , it costs them, which ends up costing the nature of the charity. so they could save their money but gain more for it. just a thought and sorry if i offend

PinkDiana Report 6 Jun 2005 20:07

I can only go by what Cancer Research UK tell me is the legal position and as stated before they tell me that permission is not necessary for balloon releases upto 1000 and I have it in writing. But as people think it may be a hassle for them then I will scrap the idea on here and this thread will be gone by morning..... BUT I will be organising my own for CRUK!

Annie

Annie Report 6 Jun 2005 20:10

pink - i wasnt implying it would be a hassle to do . i just meant it might be more worthwhile for the charity for people to donate instead

PinkDiana Report 6 Jun 2005 20:13

Stresshead please don't worry honest!! CRUK actually like balloon releases and things like that as it raises AWARENESS of their cause as well as funds! But it's not a problem honest I will just do my own! i think I may be boring people with my fundraising ideas now so I will keep them off the boards in future! Diana xx

Hi Pink, Don't get disheartened, some of us are willing to support you. It's not compulsory so those that are not interested should just stay off the thread. I've spoken to our association chairman & as far as he is concerned there will not be a problem. As the day is organised by the local council I will call them tomorrow to check it's ok from their point of view. Would I need to contact the local CRUK branch to tell them about it? Vivienne PS. Just realised I haven't told you the date, it's sunday July 10th
