Buttercup Buttercup, they call her, holding under small chin a yellow cup, the flower of a gold-ringed summer. Famous, the hours come and go. Sun slips through holes in wind, a warm smear on her damp skin. In a soil bed she lies among slim stems and wakes in a blossom's hem. At night they lock her in a null crib to listen, bound to a thin hour. Again and again, no one comes. Mosquitoes whine, the dark lowers. Under covers her body flowers into a blaze, unfolds wings. She glides on night's breath, lies on a cloud. The moon's foot touches down in a lady tall as the tall whose breath kindles the night's lights and lofts Buttercup on its swell. In thickets, she drinks rain and dwindles beneath leaves while her tall heart roots and fists around stone. This is the mystery: how she fills the day's dull shimmering with her spin, the quick sparks that fly from a wound, the way it brims and in the gold she swims, painted with a light found only underground.
