I hate to sound like a kill joy, but think very carefully before you take on any animals - they need an awful lot of care and can be very, very expensive (see my thread about my Allergic Dog). With your medical problems I would think you've got enough on your plate right now? Kaye x

Check that your landlord will allow pets. Many don't, especially as the place is let furnished, usually a real no-no. If it is a flat you rent (i think you said it was) how are they going to get outoors? jess

Cats weren't designed to kept in doors though BB..That isn't natural for a cat.If you live near a busy road then a cat isn't the best pet, surely? Let alone two. You ask how to keep them happy..by letting them go to someone who can let them out to run around in the fresh air. Sorry

Baby Report 29 Jul 2005 15:03

at the moment they are only tiny so i wouldnt let them out near the road anyway. by the time they are old enough i should be in a new house anyway

Baby Just to show the other side; my Mother-in-law has had three cats since I've known her, and she lives in a flat. They never go out, and the vet told her this was ok!! Suzy

If there is a house on the horizon then maybe you should wait until then. how old are they now? 6 weeks ...to be left alone all day when you go back to work on Tueday? Verging on cruelty.

My aunt has kept a cat for the last 10 years. No way has it cost a great amount of money to keep. Once its had its injections etc the cost is minimal as a cat doesnt eat like a horse (or average size dog) and as a house cat, it is less likely to pick up infections from other animals. Also many animal shelters give treatment or assistance to those on low incomes,,,there is no need to go to a private vet Its a bit like saying budgies should be let free and not kept in a cage, or hamsters should be let out as their true habitats are the outdoors. Enjoy your Kittys, they will have eachother for company.

Hi BB, some people think its irresponsible to let your cat out anyway as apparently theyre killing off a huge percentage of wild life. I have a cat and as it happens i let her out cos i leave next to a dene and its cat heaven for her, but the downside is all the dead creatures she brings in. As far as i know cats can adapt to either being house cats or outdoor cats. Good luck and enjoy, you'll end up loving them and spoiling them rotten.

I am sure that I read somewhere that a vet said a cat kept inside from young would know no different and would be quite happy. Not so sure about having two when you are just about to go back to work, although they will keep each other company kittens can be very destructive. Ann Glos

Hi Baby (so to speak, lol), I guess there's pro's and cons to the kits going out, or staying in. I know cat owners with multi-cat households whose pets stay indoors all the time. Personally we prefer our 5 to go out by day, and living in a house in a cul-de-sac makes it practical. As you said earlier, hopefully you'll have a house soon anyway. Although the others have beaten me to it, I'll add my bit, in that catnip is a wonderful thing! We give them catnip leaves, a sort of powdery grass, and it drives them ecstatic! They can eat it, too, if they're not feeling well. If it's raining outside and they're bored indoors, I put some on the carpet (then later hoover it up if there's any left), and it certainly entertains them. Ping-pong balls are favourites too, as they like doing their David Beckham bit. With 2 kittens, they'll be company for eachother, but I'd be inclined to spend about a week at home with them at first, if possible. All I would say after all this, is that I hope your neighbour will have her cat spayed now, as recommended by the RSPCA and Cat Protection League. Good luck with your babies! Have fun, and a cuddle to both from me. xx
