In Woking, Surrey, there's Bullbeggar's Lane. Driving to a party once, many years ago, I'd already been at the gin and was told I had to navigate, using a Surrey Atlas. There wasn't much in the way of street lighting, and it wasn't easy to read the map (Well, that's my excuse anyway!). I gaily announced to the driver that the road he was looking for was Bellbugger's Lane! (As if Bullbeggar's wasn't bad enough!) |

There is a Dead Donkey Lane between Ramsgate and Pegwell Bay in Kent - it is quite steep. As a child I always wondered about the poor donkey whenever we drove past. |

A ha-ha is a ditch, used as a boundary on country estates, to stop cattle straying, but avoiding spoiling the view with a hedge or fence. Ha-ha denotes the surprise as you nearly fall into it! York has lots of good ones, including 'The Shambles' (which we now think of as a mess, but was actually a slaughterhouse) and Whipma-Whopma Gate (not sure of spelling). London's Balls Pond Road always makes me smile as I remember an old Tony Hancock sketch in which he is a bus conductor, and thinks about how he could have bettered himself if he'd learnt Latin and could call out 'Ballus Pondus Roadus' to the passengers! We have a Carters Lane near us, which is known locally - and its now acknowledged on the road sign - as Zigzag Lane. nell |
