Fat Rascal - what's that? And what has it got to with West Yorkshire? Some of us had never even heard of it so we decided to find out more. It seems Fat Rascals have a lot to do with West Yorkshire. They are famously sold in Ilkley and Haworth. It is thought they are based on an old recipe from Turf Cakes. When Yorkshire bakers finished for the day they mixed all the leftovers together and then gave them to farmers up on the moors to bake over a turf fire. A bunch of Fat Rascals! When Swiss confectioner Frederick Belmont came to England to seek his fortune, he was fascinated by the style of Yorkshire baking. He took the Turf Cakes and decorated them with cherry eyes and split almond teeth. He thought they looked like cheeky little rascals and so the Fat Rascal was born. They are best described as fruity scones eaten at tea-time. Fat Rascals are made with currants, mixed rind, almonds and cherries and are similar to rock buns. |

That's alright Debby, it appears to be local to West Yorkshire, particularly Ilkley so I expect you are from the other bit/s of Yorkshire (Trying to make an excuse for Debby!) lol :0) Joan xx |
