Snowed overnight on Tuesday night and left roads a couple of inches deep and quite slippery. Been very cold all day, icy pavements and roads and has snowed again this evening. More forecast over the next couple of days which is a pain as I hate driving in snow - don't want to crash the car again! Oh well, at least I can't get to spend money in the sales. Take care everyone. Liz |

Len of the Chilterns | Report | 28 Dec 2005 22:12 |

Warships in Nelson's day had muzzle-loading cannons. The iron cannon balls were neatly stacked in pyramids near the guns. To stop them rolling around the decks the bottom tier was retained in a brass tray bolted to the deck and indented to the shape of the balls, thus holding them firm. When ships sailed to the N.Atlantic, or down South, low temperature caused the brass to contract at a faster rate than the iron and the cannon balls came off when the ship rolled and pitched. Hence the saying about cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey. That's how it is on the Chilterns tonight, though nary a sail in sight. len |

Right on the NE Coast just south of Middlesbrough - it is snowing at the moment but not as yet freezing - we have a slight layer of snow but thankfully the salt in the air prevents us getting a good layer. Lets hope that continues....have to venture out tomorrow and I hate driving in snow.......... |

Snow last night, melted and snowed on and off most of the day. Went to the shops this afternoon in the sunshine and it snowed twice, once for five minutes out of a dark yellow sky and then when I decided to walk home again it came down a treat. Been on and off since but it's all very white outside now in North West Norfolk. :-) Keith |

It is -2 in my little conservatory. We have heating on full blast set at highest tempreture. It is just about confortably warm. We have 3inches of snow that is frozen solid. Son has been out sledging at our local golf course which is allowed every winter. Going to get into bath now, just spoilt for choice as to what bath goodies to put in. But will defo take a big glass of Bailey's with me and my new book, The Genealogist's Internet by Peter Christian. Looks brill. Jenny. xx |
