Oh dear, I seem to have caused quite a stir. I'm sure there must have been some legitimate dressmakers on the census returns, so lets just hope they are the ones that are our ancestors Sheila, those blind boys used to get upto all sorts of tricks didn't they ;-)) |

Yes I was born and bred in Rochester. My mum used to take me in the fields with her for hop picking and especially strawberry picking. I used to sit at the side of the field playing with the other pre school kids. Strange as I grew up eating strawberrys then just a couple of years ago had an allergic reaction to one and had to get a doctor out to me. Gloria |

Hi Gloria I think you will find that Lynda's family went hop picking as well. Did your family used to come to Kent? We have several brilliant hopping exhibits round here if you are interested in more information. There are also some brilliant books which have the reminiscences of hop pickers, I have a couple of them. Lynda and I are going to a lecture on hopping next month, it should, I hope, be interesting Dee xx |

Good job my Great Great Aunt was around to keep these girls on the straight and narrow. She was a nun at the Sisters Of Mercy in Spitalfields. Deb |

Lynda Don't reckon they would have gone hop picking would they? There weren't many men hopping in Kent All the 'good time' girls would have stayed back in London - looking after the husbands Dee ;-)) |
