The area where I live used to be a WW1 Airfield, and then became Navy married Quarters so most of the roads and streets in the area reflect those histories, Although there are a number of 'Courts' named after Cathedral Cities. |

Fascinating to find out about how all the streets got their names, isn't it? We don't seem to have found many streets named after our own ancestors though, which is a shame Someone mentioned streets named after trees if I remember rightly. Well when I was growing up I lived near Hawthorn, Laburnum and Lilac Roads. While we were house hunting in Kent we came across the same roads, in close proximity to each other, and the houses were of a similar age Dee ;-)) |

Dee, The first street where I lived was named after a local landowner (Althope). Most of the newer 'estates' in MIlton Keynes have themed street names. So for instance, in Oldbrook, they're all named after cricketers, in Crownhill they're all named afer dead actors/singers (not sure if it's a coincidence but thats where the crematorium is !). The second house I lived in was named after an abbey, that was the theme of that area. I'm not quite sure what the theme is for the streets on the estate I live in now. Paul |

It's very boring as, being the main road leading from my village into the city it's named after the city and there's one of the same name in every village surrounding the city. Daisy |

The Street that I lived in when i was bornwas named after a flight of stairs at the end of it (I think) as it was called Stair street. After moving to the New Town wre the town was planned the first street was named after, as all the streets it that area, aplant. Where i stay now is in an area where all the streets are named after places in Canada. Spud |

My street is named after what it is, the drive, there's also the avenue close by, very original. but where I used to live all those streets were named after nurses, there's usually a block of streets named after something specific, like trees and poets. |

My street is School Road, as it has a school down it! An Victorian School house. My old house's street was called Bridge Road, because it had a bridge down it! |

Thanks Dee. I'll bear that in mind when I investigate. Wait! Aren't I supposed to be researching my own family tree not someone elses?! My curiosity is piqued though, so I'm just going to have to do some finding out! I like a good puzzle! |

Hi Mike - I wonder too!! Perhaps I should investigate a little. The 'big cheese' was more of a cheese slice really. He just happened to own a fairly big slice of land round here (by British standards) and he divided it up into 5 acre plots and sold it off a while ago - 10 or 20 years I think. |

Used to live on streets names Elora (named after a gorge) also lived on Rolston Drive (named after the original land owner). Now live on East 19 (just a number) lol. Two of my sisters live in a little northern town and all the roads going east to west are named 1st Street., 2nd Street and so on. All the roads going north to south are 1st Avenue, 2nd Avenue etc. Don't know who named them but didn't have much of an imagination it seems. LOL |

The cul-de-sac I live in was originally named after Baron Dimsdale whose family purchased most of the land of a nearby villiage. The housing was built for Belgian refugees in the early 1900's. The place became rather a 'red light' area so I'm informed and the housing was demolished to make way for new houses in the 1960's. The place was renamed from two words and has no meaning to the area. Interesting, a road I once lived in was named after a local solicitor/historian who was instumental in naming many of the roads in The First Garden City, linking them to meanings/names/places/persons related to the town(city). I live in a tiny town called Gold bar and the streets that have names are called things like Prospector Drive and Nugget Lane. One street, Verlinde Drive is named after Mr Verlinde, a 'big cheese' who once lived here. Most of the streets are numbered though, as is the american custom and street names is, oddly, one of the things I really miss from England. |
