When I was at school we could opt out of P.E. to do social studies. Mine consisted of having cups of tea and cake with the old people in the nursing home across the road - much nicer than cross country runs. I used to talk to an old man who had been a soldier in the boer war and had received his commission from Queen Victoria. He had also worked on the Berlin Baghdad railway. Fascinating stuff. I also remember one of my great aunts born 1872. I just wish i had paid more attention to her stories of family history.

My great grandmother nursed me as a baby, she was born 1854. I can remember my great aunt Alice, born in the 1880's quite well, wish I'd asked more questions then, but I was too young to be interested.

I met my gt grandmother, Mary Jane Wrigley Goodman, who was born in 1864. I remember she was bedridden and had a big bed in my gt aunt's front room. I was plonked on the end of the bed while my mum and dad showed her my baby sister. She gave me a sixpenny bit when I kissed her goodbye. She died in 1962. Carolyn

My great grandmother, Nellie Carsons (Phillips) who was born in 1863. I have a photo of '4 generations' , me, my Mum, my grandma and my great grandma taken in G Grandma's garden in 1950. I vividly remember, as a toddler, shouting in her ear trumpet (which I think was made from an animal's horn) so she could hear what I was saying as she was very deaf. She died in 1952. One of her daughters, my great aunt Constance, lived to be 100. My mother-in-law was born in 1916 and she is the oldest living person I know. Sue

He made the mistake of leaning over to try and comfort me...... i booted his ear off... funny enough I can still recall the horror of it all LOL Oldest living is Hubbys nan born 1912 and my Nan 1923

My oldest was my great grandfather George Herbert Fillmore. He was born Jan 30th 1880 in Saint John NB Canada and died Jan 14, 1980. He used to joke that he would live to be 100 and died two weeks before his 100th birthday. Helped raised his 14 children. Used to ask him how he lived so long and he always said, 'ride my bike everyday, shot of brandy every night and then he'd just point to his stack of girlie mags he kept on his dresser. LOL Rode his bike 5 miles the day before he died. Was a wonderful, kind and gentle man.

My grandmother Gladys Winifred Mary Williams, nee Smoothy, who was born 22 May 1893. She was an only child and her mother died when she was just 11. Gladys went into service and began writing to Angus Williams when she was set up as a penpal by her friend Edith, who was engaged to Angus' cousin Frank. Both Angus and Frank were in France in WW1 at this time. Angus and Gladys' letters became more friendly and by the time they met they were calling eachother 'Dearest'. After the war, Angus found it hard to get work and had several set backs, but he and Gladdie married in 1923 and my mother, their first child, was born the following year. Gladdie had the great tragedy of seeing both her sons die - one aged 15 of peritonitis and one aged 53 of cancer. But she retained a strong faith in the afterlife. She died in 1990.

The oldest person I ever met was my Gt Grandad (Dad's Grandad) he was born in 1888, although I was 5 years old when he died. I don't remember him although my Nan tells me I met him when I was a baby, and cried when I saw him, Nan said I was frightened of him because he had a white beard. The oldest living person I know now is one of my hairdressing clients, a lovely lady of almost 94, she's really with it and often tells me stories of how things were years ago, she showed me some lovely photos of her as a little girl aged 2 with her mother and brothers & sisters. I could listen to her for hours, her nephew has started researching their family tree and she is a great help to him. Michele X
