A big book (over 900 pages) called The Devil's Disciples, which is about Hitler's circle - Goebbels, Goring, Himmler etc. As well as being a multiple biography, its also a history of the times and very readable. I'm also reading a biography of Shakespeare and a book about the chess master Bobby Fischer. After that I've got some more biogs. I am reading more non-fiction now, but the last fiction I read was Daphne Du Maurier's 'The House on the Strand' and I am going to get 'Thud' as soon as its out in paperback, I really admire Terry Pratchett. nell

Daisy - You should see my Dad's pile! It is quite high and it sits next to his chair. He's the librarian in a school library and likes to read as much of the fiction books that come in before they go on the shelves. I suppose the arguement is it makes him better able to suggest books to the kids, but I suspect its more a case of he's been waiting to read them and wants to get in there first!

It's a crime thriller follow up to Flesh and Blood (which i haven't read...but will be looking for now!!) about a crime that goes wrong and the results that follow, tied in with the personal life of the main detective now retired, and the effects of the previous case on his family. I normally read books in order, but got this one at the train station where my choice was limited. The author wrote a series of crime books featuring a character called Charlie Resnick, has anyone read them and are they worth looking for?

I love The Crowner John Series! Brilliantly told and enough fact in there to make it more than interesting. Bernard Knight was the pathologist on the Fred West case wasn't he? - I think that's in the blurb inside. He has written a number of books on pathology too - one of these days I might try one of those and find out if he has the same way of of capturing the reader with fact as he does fiction. I have just finished James Patterson's Third Degree, and before that, Patricia Cornwell's Predator. Good reads both of them Mags x

Mags - I've read several of the Crowner series (out of order!) and am surprised by this one, the first in the series. The story behind his clerk is not the same as told in the later books for example!

Just started Dickens' Hard Times for the GReaders. Can't believe how easy to read it is so far! Next up is Empress Orchid from the Richard and Judy list. It sounds so fab that I'm not waiting for GReaders to choose it - will read it anyway! Maz. XX

I always like starting up this topic because lots of people read so lots of people answer! I don't really talk about books with my work colleagues or friends, I'm not sure if any of them read for fun! I'm going to have to write down some of these titles to try myself.

DV - wasn't that because the claims that his clerk had to leave clerical orders in disgrace were proven to be scurrilous? I've read them all but I have to admit I didn't pick up any discrepancies - I must have missed that. Perhaps I read to fast - or my memory is that bad it didn't click! Magsx
