I believe that the wooden poles which go up and down on a pair of pulleys are Dutch Airers, if that's any help. |

'Lazy Maiden' was what ours was called when selling our old house. It was the original, put in when the house was built. Although it was in the breakfast room not the kitchen, clothes put to dry alwys smelt of food. Yuk. Jenny. |

I'm a bit confused now :-) Right, so the name of pulley line I had in my head for some reason isn't right? |

Daniel, I think some folks used to refer to it as a 'pulley' or 'clothes pully' Jenny. |

We always called it the pulley. 'put it on the pulley' sounds daft now I suppose never thought of it having an other name, well you live and learn! Norah |

Thanks for the help. I I was actually lucky enough to see a working one in a house when I was younger. Two old spinster sisters living together had there's in the living room. Very odd to me being about 7. |

I think it is called a 'tidy dry' , you fit it on the wall and pull out a bar that has 4 rope/cord on it ,pull out and hook it over at the other end. sorry not ver good at descibing it, but I know what it is lol I think you still get them. Marion |

When I was a kid in West Yorkshire.... it was on two wheels fastened on the ceiling, fancy iron peices at both ends and wooden bars like props (5 or 6) through holes either end. We used to lower it with the pully rope put on the washing and pull it... and tie the rope around a metal hook on the wall. We called it a 'CREEL' Any other Yorkshire person remember calling it that? Anne :))) |

Yep asked hubby - definitely creel and we're from West Yorkshire Honey Rum! A lazy susan is a spinning disc in the middle of the table with food on the top! Debby |
