Memories perhaps of your school-days, mainly how things have changed . The things we did; had to do;etc. As I,m older than most i will simply mention gas-masks; dashing across the school yard to the air-raid shelters; and i was the boy in charge of blotting paper. Happy days

Harry I remember in my infants school having to have a sleep in the after noon, we all lay on camp beds which I hated as I wasn't tired. Also ink wells at the secondary school, they always got blocked up with blotting paper we took it in turns to be the ink monitor and when it was my turn I always got covered in the stuff - my mother went mad - no washing machines in those days. Good times. Liz

1970-1977.. I remember using fountain pens with cartridges at Junior school. We never had to wear uniform. Did PE in Knickers and vest in infants. We used to take it in turns by class to go on the playground apparatus, called the 'Jungle Gym'. Playing 'Whats the time Mr wolf' in the playground and laying on the school field under the shade of the trees during playtimes in a summer that never ended. Looking out of the first floor junior class window (while I should have been working) watching my dear grandad drive down the road to pick me up for lunch. While doing so I could hear the noise of the crass cutting tractor and smell the fresh cut grass on the school field. What happy safe times they were Elaine x

Gloss painted brickwork in the classrooms, - I can see it now in my mind....It was a dull sludge green at the bottom, one brick width of black gloss topped by dark cream. We had cast iron boilers in most classrooms in the junior school but at least one room had an open fire surrounded by a nursery fireguard. ...Wouldn't pass health and safety checks nowadays. Thursdays meant ... Art lesson. We had a small piece of paper, an old tin of water colour paints to share one between 2, an old paste jar of water pushed into the inkwell, ( ink having been collected by the 'Ink Monitor) and that was it. We were given a subject, no guidance and we just got on with it. ..... Before being returned, the ink pots would be topped up, the ink getting thinner by the addition of water at times to ensure that supplies lasted until the end of term.

Just remembered the paper towel monitors. Just before I left junior school it switched from the old thin roller towel, ..... 'Quick, Roll it round so Miss doesn't see that we wiped the paintbrush on it' Only 1 paper towel was permitted after handwashing so monitors stood guard by the towel dispensers.

Parafin heaters! I can still smell them, and the teacher used to put bottles of milk on top in winter to warm them. Outside loos, yeugh! Learning to write with a slate and chalk, then when you could form numbers and letters you got a pencil! Learning to do 'joined-up' writing, with a nib pen (no fountain or cartridge) just a nib on the end of a piece of pencil shaped wood, and you dunked it in the ink-well and blotted with your blotting paper! Then.... when you went to wherever after you 11 plus you got a fountain pen, and if you were lucky and stayed on, you got a cartridge pen! The cows in nearby fields getting into the playground, and worst of all one coming into the hallway! Going for 'nature-study' lessons in those fields, and getting shoes covered in 'cows clap'. And... during a really bad snowy winter in the 60's the school having to close, and the lollipop man carrying the tiny ones across the road because the snow was so deep. The only time the school ever closed during term time, it was brilliant, the snow was so deep if you put your foot down the snow came above your wellies!!
