Chestnuts roasting on an open fire... I remember the rag & bone man. Also the Wall's ice cream van. It played 'O sole mio' and drove up our little close, turned round at the top and parked outside our house. Very handy. You could buy a Wall's brick of vanilla icecream, which was given to you wrapped up, with a wafer shaped to hold the brick (like a rectangular cone!). You had to assemble it yourself. There was also an oyster - two wafer shells which had ice cream in, which had the added excitement of 100s & 1000s on it. Jamboree bags. Frost on the INSIDE of the window. Crackerjack pencils! nell

Very well Chris, My brother and I would sit on the doorstep, waving old rags and waiting for him to turn onto our street, when we knew he was in the area. We had many a goldfish, balloon etc. But a lot of the time, mum would instruct us to ask for a brwon or cream stone, for cleaning the doorsteps. My gg grandfather was a carter. He died at 33 from Pneumonia....and no wonder being out in all weathers. Lin

My sister and I were recalling recently just how many tradesmen came round the streets. We had a paraffin man, greengrocer, baker, grocer and shoe repair man to name a few more for your list. The latter was always welcome. He collected shoes on a Tuesday and returned them repaired on a Saturday.... very necessary in our 'Unadopted' road which was so stoney.
