I have suddenly got loads of those little violas in my pots and tubs, have had ordinary violets before but don't know where these came from with their little faces.

I think the tiny thing like a pansy with a smiley face is heartsease isnt it? I dont find too many true dandelions, more of the other ones with the hairy leaves, forgotten the name, is it crowsbit or something like that? When I was about 12 I entered a competition in a newspaper childrens page for a named collection of wild flowers. I won. No wonder, every time dad took us anywhere in the car I would yell at him to stop because I had seen a new one. Looked up the names in some books, still got the books somewhere. I think my prize was 10 shillings, magnificent in the late forties.

These flowers are all purple, I think Heartsease have yellow and purple flowers? Coincidentally, there is an area of Norwich called Heartsease.

Think heartsease is the pansy/ viola family. Would have to see the plant, certainly the leaves, before committing myself. Germander? for Chris.? Problem with pansies and violas is that the bees mongolise them and the colour of seedlings can greatly vary. Happy days

Just shows that all the Philistines are not in the bible. As an unconnected afterthought, delighted to see my grand-daughter and grandson sitting on the grass at Fairhaven lake, making daisy chains. Pleased for her, not certain about the grand-son. Happy days

My lawn regularly has dandelions and daisies, but never buttercups. I remember my parents' garden - it had a lawn divided into two by a hawthorn tree. The bit nearest the house was immaculate. Behind the hawthorn, they let it grow longer and it had lots of buttercups and daisies. My friends and I used to play princesses there, and do daisy chains and 'do you love butter'? nell

Nell, Thanks for that. My afterthought, above, was typed before your message appeared - a happy co-incidence. (believe buttercups prefer a damper spot than daisies) Happy days

Thanks for that. Dandelions are now rarer at my golf club. The ditches are a mass of buttercups after all the recent rain. Happy days

Harry - hope you were kidding when you showed concern for your grandson and daisy chains. Let him show his feminine side - it is lovely.

Harry Report 10 Jun 2006 10:45

PP, Twas a lovely sight, but being very old fashioned, would prefer him to make daisy chains AFTER kicking his ball about. No offence to anybody, I,m just old fashioned. Your thought was a nice one and much appreciated. Happy days

My grass is covered with daisies and I don't care! LOL They do look so pretty. I also have a (supposed) rose bed which is overrun with buttercups and forget-me-nots. The poor roses don't stand a chance! A weed is only a flower that grows in the wrong place - and I like to say I have a 'natural garden'! LOL Sue xx

My husband wanted to plant wild flowers in the grass outside our bungalows. We thaought it would look beautiful, but when I mentioned it, no one else thought so!! I too remember the wild flowers of my childhood. Daisy chains, and picking flowers for mummy. The cornflowers and poppies which grew in the cornfields behind our house in Deusburg (spelling) so my favourites have always been the three together... Ears of corn, poppies, and cornflowers. ther is not a prettier picture. UNLESS... you like the bunches of bluebells we ALL picked for mummy, and were picked for us when we became mummies!! That's it Harry do it to me again... get my memories flowing.;-0) Deanna X

'Kicks' and 'lifts' are all around us , but we too often choose not to notice. I have plants in pots all round the house and people comment on them. All apart from my good lady who not ten minutes ago asked me to move them all so she could tidy up. Some hope. Might be advertising in the lonely hearts column next week. Happy days
