I am sure over the years my cats and my mum's too have strolled around our gardens (mine used to stay with mum when I went away) and we had loads of different flowers and shrubs. Also neighbours cats come in the garden and wander round, can't do much about that really. If you do get pollen on your clothes or furnishings don't try to wash it off, get as much pollen off as you can with a piece of sticky tape.

Oooh, Good tip Purple!!!! I think cats are more sensible than to go around chewing poison plants..They must ahave a sixth sense about stuff like that, but with pollen they may not realise if they're licking it off their fur... I am getting more convinced now that Poppy was poisoned, all the other tests were neg, It's the only thing that would cause her symptoms.....(may pop out tonight and stalk neighbours gardens for Lillies, lol) LOU XXXXXXXXXXXX

Best thing to do with lilies is cut out the stamens, then no pollen to get on clothes or cats! Vivienne xx

I am amazed to read all these comments - and so sorry about the moggies who have been poorly or died - I have 2 cats and often buy myself lilies, as does a friend with 4 cats - we are all ok somehow but wondering about these allergies!

Oh crikey............I love lilies and OH buys me a bunch every week. Also got four cats who I love dearly. Luckily the lilies are placed in a spot where the cats can't get at them and I also cut of the pollen stems..........mainly because if it gets on your clothes your stuck with it. As for the other plants listed...........I've got a lot of those in the garden but never noticed any of the cats suffer as a result. Still worth knowing though. Shall print that lot out. Thanks

Having nudged this for various people,,,cannot believe I'd forgotten cyclamen. Glad I moved the plant from cat's reach yesterday morning.

My OH buys me lilies every week and we have four cats. When I first heard about this I was really worried but the pollen will only be fatal if its on the cats coat and the cat licks it off (quite likely as they're very clean creatures and are constantly having a wash) I normally cut the stamens (is that the right word) of pollen out before I put them in a vase just to make sure.

This is an old one.... Still won't have them in the house..My one ate the leaves as well..! All three cats surviving in a flowerless house...:-)

Well, I never knew about this and am shocked! Often when people buy me bouquets, they have lilies in the bunch. I am actually allergic to the smell of lilies once they open up (brings on migraine) so they don't usually stay in my home for very long! I give them to my sister in law. Just as well because my cat will chew on any flowers or plants he can get to - he's wrecked my spider plants, and will have a go at daffs and tulip leaves if I forget to put them up on a high shelf. If all those flowers and plants listed are dangerous to cats then I am glad my moggy is a house cat! Will definitely keep all flowers away from him in future! Athena

OMG Was thinking I may have to go undercover then. Seriously, that is awful - i love lillies (hence the name) I don't have any in the house, but I have some in a pot in the garden & she can't get to it. PP - I do know that my cat is not affected by Poinsettias (another favourite of mine) as one christmas, I was so proud cos I'd been remembering to water it and it was flourishing. Came down one morning - Poppy sat next to a twig, surrounded by the petals and leaves. Good job I love her!! Lilly xxx

thought I was suffering from Deja Vu here until I realised this was an old one nudged. It is the pollen and I think i read it is OK if you cut the stamens (& pollen) off. Ann Glos

LillyAnn, I am glad your cat was ok after demolishing your Poinsettia, I wouldn't hurt a cat or any animal, but saw on the list I am low toxicity anyway lol
