Although we get a weekly collection here, I use those toilet disinfectant blocks (that come wrapped in coloured cellophane) and place one at the base of the bin, then put garbage liner bag into bins. Stops that awful pong from festering refuse! Especially in our hot climate. Plus they are much cheaper than all the fancy bin deodorisers. Lyn

Why not get some leftover bits of voile or even a scrap of a tatty pillow case, anything that won't let the powder fall through but isn't too thick to work, make a sort of lavender bag sachet, fill with bicarbonate of soda, and stitch up the top or sew a zip in, then tie elastic to two corners and fix round so it hangs inside the bin lid. This should absorb odours and you can shake it and air it on a nice day, and reuse and occasionally replace the powder. I have an empty H & B tablet container with holes in the lid, and I fill that with bicard and keep it in the fridge, to absorb any odours in there. Just take it out and replace powder, or empty out on to a piece of kitchen paper and leave to dry out a bit then put back into container.

Right. For those of you who wish to know. A Green cone is a large (ish) green plastic thingy, bit like an upturned old fashioned dustbin. It sits on top of a green plastic thingy, which is sunk into the ground and looks like a laundry basket. You throw all cooked and raw waste into it,(through the lid in the top) sprinkled with the special powder you get with it, which accelerates the decompostion and stops any smells, thus not attracting vermin or flies. I have had mine about four years and I think its fantastic! Mine has never needed emptying, it just sort of dissolves away. Sadly, it wont take doogy-doos (well, it says not) but of course you can buy a doggy-doo thingy, which works on similar principles - hole in the ground, covered with a lid, but a different sort of powder, I assume. We too have a green cone - ours came from our council. We use compost bins for uncooked waste ie peelings, clippings etc and the green cone for anything cooked like leftovers, bread and also uncooked meat bones. Laughed at an earlier reply - think it was blues as I read - I stick jam under the lid........pmsl x Clearly I'm feeling a bit dislexic tonight x Still perhaps it's a cheap, chemical free solution to your odour ordeal x

Doh! I wanted to tell you about green cones, but youve beaten me to it. No smelly food leftovers with a green cone, it just all sort of dissolves into the ground and because of the powder you use, it doesnt attract vermin or flies. My wheelie bin is embarrassingly empty, just a coy little bread bag containing non recyclable waste like plastic meat wrap and fag ends! Olde Crone
