Sorry everyone had to go to work after I had posted, but just getting 10 minutes back to checkup now!!! - Sons want the PC. Elaine as far as I know : Cos kick a boll agen a wall an yed i till it bosts ??? means: Can you kick a ball against a wall with your head tell it bursts. I still say cOOk, lOOk and bOOk etc. But my accent has definitely changed - hubby's from Yorkshire (Doncaster) and after being together for so long and living in Sheffield for a few years, my accent is quite an odd mix of Stoke and South Yorkshire. Not 100% certain but think thats the gist of it!!! - Still doesn't make much sense to me - you can't head a rugby ball very successfully!!! lol It's a very small world here, I've really enjoyed reading the threads on these places, it brings back so many memories. Two of my friends who I'm still in contact with lived in May Bank while we were at school. My mum was born in Wolstanton, but spent a lot of time at Seabridge. Dad's family came mainly from Newcastle. When you have picked a date for the Stoke meet - if I can make it - I'll try and make it, but can't promise as I've got quite a lot of commitments over the summer. Anne in North London xx |

Funny you should say that Marie, everyone told me I had a 'posh' accent' when they first met me ! ... they thought I was a snob, because I was so quiet etc ..! that was before I got to know everyone, they soon changed there tunes after a few months ! and couldn't believe I was the same person :-)) I find it amusing that within ... 20 minutes drive, from one county to another, the accents and dialogue change so much ! If I disappear, please forgive me, I will be back at some point :-) Elaine ;-) |

Hi Anne, I didnt realise there was so many of us from Stoke on Trent, maybe this mini meet with Elaine will become a not so mini meet afterall, mind you, you will have a fair way to come from North London haha! I wasnt brought up in Stoke so never went to Jollies etc but all my mates reminiss ( spelling ) so heard all about it, although I did work at the Place Nightclub in Hanley for a while although its a mans club now I believe called 007. When I go back to Lancs for a visit my mum always says, gosh Marie you sound more of a Stokie than your hubby does and he was born there, its only because I call her Duck! and my mates down here think I sound dead posh, God knows why! Morning all x Welcome Anne, small world isn't it !! Can I assume that you will all understand this ( I still can't ) Cos kick a boll agen a wall an yed i till it bosts ??? When I first moved to Stoke, I could NOT understand what folks were saying to me. I was SOOO embarrassed, and felt so ignorant, having to keep saying 'Sorry ??' After a month or so, I started to get used to the accent xxx and soon picked it up and started talking broad Staffs. When I came home to Derbyshire, I didn't 'alf get the mickey taken out of me, but people here loved to here me talk. My Staffs accent soon wore off x Well, must go .... things to tend to today :-) Some crettin has broken into daughters car over night, so have to make some phone calls now :-)) Elaine ;-) |

Elaine, Marie and Liz, Good Morning to you all. Firstly thanks to all of you for welcoming me on Mandy's thread last night, sorry I wasn't around last night. Secondly - Guess where I'm from originally................ Yes born in Newcastle-under-Lyme, lived in Keele until I went to college in Sheffield and then moved to London!!!! I remember Jollies and the Place, but tended to go more often to the Placemate in Newcastle!! One of the last places we took my dear mum was to see Tommy Cooper at Jollies. My mum was born in Wolstanton and my dad in Newcastle, so most of my research is around there. Sadly haven't been there for a while now, but still have 3 aunts and uncles that live there who I am in touch with. Love Anne in North London xx |

..... I know where Burslem and Tunstall are !! Which one has the Kentucky Fried Chicken ??? (Tunstall ??) Well, you, Val, myself and if Liz is still around, we could all meet up ! I know there are a couple of others from Stoke as well, that are ( or were ) on Records Office ....... maybe they would like to join us as well. It doesn't have to be when I'm coming up this time round - obviously I'll have my dear ole Dad with me - but there's nothing stopping us having a Stoke Meet is there !! any time !! Will leave you to think about that :-)) Son needs my attention - well, he doesn't need it or want it for that matter ! BUT I have to go and stop him playing footie and drag him in the direction of the bathroom and then remind him where his Bedroom is !!! Elaine ;-) |

That would be nice to have a mini meet I am sure we can arrange something, there is another member just across the fields from where I live that I could ask aswell, she is Val from Gala I had my first mini mini meet a while back with her she is such a nice lady, just the two of us went to a local cafe for a coffee, it was really nice, we never stopped talking! Smallthorne is just up the road from Burslem about a mile away if that! Marie: ) |

Have definately heard of it, (Smallthorne) but wouldn't like to say that I know where it is. Not sure that I know anyone from there either. Good thing about working as a Bar Maid, you get to meet loads and loads of people, and you can go out and about with them, but still not know who your with ! I lived in Longton for about 18mths with my Dad, then got my own flat up in May Bank for about a year, before getting house in Knutton when I had my daughter. After 4/5 years I was so home sick for Derbyshire, that I just up sticks and came home :-))) ... left all my friends behind without a word :-( Bet most of them have moved on or got married now with kids etc of their own. Happy fond memories of Stoke ... I'm glad I had some time there, and it's nice that it's not too far away that I can't go back and visit occasionally ! I'll let you know when I'm coming over, might even stay over ... so we'll have to have a mini mini meet !! Elaine ;-) Unless Jollies is still open as a night club, I doubt the Union would get much trade ????? Bet Ken & Molly aren't still running the Union ???? Will HAVE to call in at Union for a drink !!! |

Just asked Hubby about the Union Hotel, he seems to think its still open, apparently it had planning permission for alterations and disabled access and refurbishment in 2002, so sounds like its been done up. Marie: ) |

Longton has a good selection of shops ! .... but I have always found Stoke, Hanley and Longton dark, dusty and dingy ( no disrespect ) and then when you go into Newcastle, it seems so much cleaner and brighter ... The Union Hotel ... is the pub I worked at in Longton ...is that still open does anyone know ? Elaine ;-) |

Well, when I go with dad, it will all become clear ! First stop will be Knutton Lane, then round to Silverdale, up to see Keele then back down, round Clayton, into Newcastle - is Mac D's still on the Market place ???? Then we'll have a gander into Stone, and back again, upto MayBank and Wolstanton and then back via Stoke into Longton. dad will NOT leave Stoke without any Oatcakes, so we'll no doubt go to Longton Indoor market !! ... one of my favourite haunts !! Wonder if Jollies is still open ??? do you know ??? I worked in the pub opposite that for quite a while ... and would nip across to Jollies Thursday/Friday and Saturday nights most w/ends. bet they're all close down now !! Elaine ;-) |

If you leave N/c town centre and head up to MayBank, The Victoria Arms is on your left. Keep going another 100 yards to traffic lights and turn right ... the pub is there in front of you ... This is driving me insane !! Am I getting old and loosing my memory ??? I have a feeling it was **** Arms, but I'm sure it wasn't the Cricketers ... god I'm loosing it !! How frustrating ! |
