For many years I have voiced my concerns about the western hypocricy of retaining nuclear weapons while at the same time dictating to the rest of the world who may and may not use that technology. The western world thinks it has the right to foist all sorts of things on other countries, including democracy. Lebanon and Palestine were forced to hold democratic elections and look who they voted in - Hezbollah and Hamas and now America has the gall to say, 'Oh, but that's not what we wanted. We'll only recognise a democratic election that votes in the party that WE want.' I ask you - when are America and Britain going to keep out of other people's business? They created the mess in the Middle East by dumping Israel in there and funding its armaments to the tune of billions. The same mess happened with Yugoslavia. America is the only country who has EVER used nuclear weapons aggressively. If only for that reason, why should anyone else on the planet take the slightest notice of what they have to say? We can't even get a decent view of the news here and I have to look to the internet and news from other countries to really see what's going on in the world. Like I said on another thread - wouldn't it be wonderful if they had a war and nobody came?

I don't think that we could have a 'World' war in the same sense that the last 2 were - as Ann in Glos says, any global war today would be completely different. It would basically be a stand-off between superpowers, the UN would also be defunct and I can't see that happening short-term.

Its no suprise to me that the Americans are yet again backing the Isreali's and I do believe that they do have a right to defend themselves but their track record is not good. They have all but systematically wiped out the palestinians cultural heritage and I fear they will now do the same to the Lebanon. How the Americans can be seen to be the peace keepers is extremely shortsighted given most of the Isreali weapons are US traded stock! As for Pauls point about the hypocrisy between us and Irans nuclear programmes - I believe that Iran shouldn't have nuclear cabapility. We no longer have capital punishment and certainly not for crimes against chastity directed at women as young as 16. If Iran wishes to consider itself a civilised country it should behave as such not continuing its violence against women. A man accused of such a crime receives lashes, a woman is hung or stoned to death! The thought of these maniacs having nuclear cabapility frightens the hell out of me. And lastly (as if I've not ranted enough - sorry!x) I am more worried as someone else said about whether or not we will have a world to fight over. We cannot ignore the climate any longer! Dianna x

Well, of course, we do have the option of fighting through the Ballot Box - should that lunatic Blair decide he is going in with America (oh, sorry, that should have read ' if Bush decies Britain is going into War with America...) then we have the option of overthrowing the Government and putting in someone - even temporarily - who doesnt feel the need to suck up to America and doesnt want to go to War with anyone at all. My daughter is ex-forces and she says - dont bother trying to find a safe place if someone lets off a nuclear weapon - just pray that it hits you and yours directly. OC

JackyJ1593 Report 28 Jul 2006 14:16

My first thought when September 11th happened was that it would start WW3. With so many people against war and weapons, far more than in previous conflicts, I hope that people will refuse to fight. If that is done worldwide, perhaps the people will be listened to rather than the politicians. But I dearly hope it never comes to that. Jacky
