Double jointedness in my mother's line, but only in the girls; long fingers, and rock hard fingernails. I'm probably tempting fate by saying this, but as far as I have so far worked out, no-one in my mother's side of the family (at least to the late 1800's) has died of cancer. Other than my mum having a non-aggressive skin cancer thing removed from her face 20 years ago, we don't think anyone in that line has ever had cancer. That is probably quite unusual. Bev x

Here are some other genetic traits to look for: Tongue rolling, widows peak, cleft chin, dimples, earlobe attachment, mid-digital finger hair, red/green colour blindness, hitchhiker's thumb. Also, hand clasping. If you clasp your hands together take note of which thumb is on top. Rose

I have 'tailor's thumbs' which is where the thumb is fairly short and the nail is wider than usual. I inherited these from a grandmother and, strangely enough, both her grandfathers were tailors so I imagine one of them had tailors thumbs too! None of my children have these so I shall be inspecting the grandchildren when they are born in the future! I also have double-jointed shoulders and fingers, which my middle child has, too.

Tina and anyone else with the bent finger, :-) It is only the pinky on our right hands, and just the girlies, my hubby says it is a sign of being a witch...tut....! Also my Mum, (before she started to loose her sight) my sis and I are all short sighted in the same eye and long sighted in the other. I also have asthma Gwynne passed down, and early onset angina, my brothers escaped , so I think our gene pool was all humped on me and my sis :-) But in looks I favour my Fathers side I think.

Husband and son can waggle their ears. Hubby can also raise an eyebrow and waggle a chosen ear on demand- very talented. Both are extremely musical and got that from generations before. But neither hubby nor his 3 brothers can lie down with their arms flat on the floor above their heads. It is just not possible due to their muscle structure. Goodness knows where that cam from? Son is okay with that. I, on the other hand, have inherited a mole on my left boob from my mum and all her sisters! Aileenx

Thin hair from my mother's mother - but not the colour, her hair was still jet black when she died. Stubborn streak - from my mother and her father! And passed this on to my two as well! Everyone has some good in them - my gran never said a bad word about anyone, I'm not that good but I do try! Varicose veins!! Mum's side again...

Tiddler can turn her tongue over and when I mentioned it to mum she said what like this and did the same thing. I have got the red hair from mums side although mum was the only child without it. Also got their temper. Hubby saw a picture of my gt gt grandfather and said thats exactly how you stand and looking at his wife eldest has her finger which are long. None of them have got my double jointed thumbs though Tiddler is like hubby and has his fine baby hair and two eldest have an artistic flair which is hubbys side all over. Dads side leg ulcers reign supreme so just waiiting for that to emerge in us lot and mums side Cancer is rife in one form or another. Hubbys dad and grandad both had bowel cancer so that will probably rear its ugly head as well. Sure I could think of loads more but have to get children to opticians to see if they have inherited my bad eyes

I know it sounds a bit odd but childlessness seems to run in our family. My mother had/has two childless aunts, two childless sisters, two childless daughters and two childless granddaughters !

Big head. 7 1/4 me, same as daughters. (big brains? daughter Cambridge graduate). Loads of hair, don't go bald - uncle Fred still has a full head of hair at 88. Dad did when he died at 79. Argumentative and opinionated. Mums side, her dad Jack Paterson rowed with his dad and left home at 16 and went to Australia, only came back for WW1. Boxer, busted nose, rose through the ranks until he was wounded in 1917. Both my daughters are strong opinionated women who don't tolerate fools. Eldest daughter has banana fingers like my Dad and his before him, Ernie had hands like shovels! It's good to know your past, and it's relevance.
