I enjoyed it and it was a very different David Tennant we saw from the start of his journey to the end of his journey wasnt it. Why didnt they go back to Mum and Dad at the end with his results?

Faith Report 27 Sep 2006 22:06

It didn't grip me this week at all. He seemed very judgemental about his relatives and didn't seem as enthusiastic as I would have hoped.

Love David Tennant anyway. What terrible things our rellies had to put up with though. I hadn't heard about what happened on the islands in the past. Wicked Lynda x

Very bad taste of him with the skull and thats what i meant, a very different man by the end of his journey. Im of Irish back ground,Catholic, this week tugged at me i have to say. Though it wasnt the most exciting one, i guess for those with Scotts and Irish back ground it was? Im of both lol.

Barbara

Barbara Report 27 Sep 2006 22:14

Thought he was rather judgemental, and that the programme could have been twice as long as it obviously missed out loads, but I enjoyed it, not just because a lot of my rellies came from that neck of the woods.... Barbara..xx

Is it just me or did the early programs not concentrate more on family history than political stuff. I too had Scotish and Irish ancestors, and was looking forward to finding out more about searching for Irish ancestors but they seem to cut out a lot, like how did he find his cousins? Last week there was a lot of time devoted to Colin Jacksons slave background, and not enough to his fathers side. Why was there no mention of David's fathers side ? Must say i was disappointed, but still think David is dishy Ann :-)

He was insensitive and, for the first time in this series, I found my attention wandering and would have switched channels had there been anything else worth watching. len

. I dont think that the 'how did they find' part of any of these programmes is in the least bit interesting - generally they would have been described on the censuses as 'soldier' wife of clergyman' 'ag labs' 'match girl' etc., but what the BBC does bring to everyone's attention is how things probably were in those times whether in Jamaica, Africa, Ireland, Scotland, London slums etc., and those are the interesting parts as far as I am concerned. Interesting to see that a family with 10 children lived in a croft in the middle of nowhere on Mull. Irish cottages along the waterfront in Ireland all with brightly coloured doors etc., - looked bit like some of the small villages in West Lake District. As for David and his rellies - who really cares ? or Barbara Windsor which you can read on Google any time - but the social life at that time makes you think of how your own ancestors survived. I have to say I understand a little more the Irish problems that are still ongoing and I do understand why he felt judgemental - not only amazed at his relatives activities in Ireland but probably shocked at the depth of feeling regarding the protestants v catholics. I also note that these programmes do not go very far back into the past presumably there is a good enough story within living history.

I was not impressed either, started off very good then just went into a political debate really, I dont hink this series is as good as the last one. I got rather bored with it all come the end.

For him and all the other celebs it is the first time tracing their tree so just doing a couple on their direct line is only appropriate where as for a lot of us that have spent so much time on it we are interested in the siblings of our ancestors as well. So I think thats maybe why some of us dont enjoy the programme as much as we should. And also some of us are jealous of how so many people willing give their services and show them all the ancient papers and documantation that is not so readily available to Jo Public. One thing I have never understood is the troubles of Ireland and the Orange Lodge etc so didnt find that very interesting.
