So there we were, getting all ready for Christmas......

Philip

Philip Report 18 Dec 2006 10:29

Life feels very strange and disjointed at present. Last Wednesday, we had a phone call from Duncan, Paula's elder son who's been backpacking and diving in Tanzania and Mozambique for the past four months with half a dozen friends, to say that his best friend, whom we know quite well, had just been murdered by local thieves after his passport and any money he might have on him. Apparently two of the friends had their drinks spiked with heroin, and it proved lethal for Dan, although his other friend is slowly recovering. Dan was a great guy, 26 years old, full of fun, loads of work for charity, including climbing Kilimanjaro the other year. Why does it always happen to the good? So Christmas plans are up the chute at present. Hopefully they all fly back into Heathrow on Wednesday with Dan's body, then we'll just have to play it by ear ..... Sure we'll all pull through, but support for Dan's parents would be very much appreciated.

That's awful. We feel that history is repeating itself. About five years ago our local vicar died suddenly of a heart attack just before Christmas. Last week his replacement had a heart attack, not fatal though. The vicarage is in our road, so we knew/know them both as friends and neighbours as well as in an official capacity.

Purple **^*Sparkly*^** Diamond Report 18 Dec 2006 13:28

Dear Lord, how tragic. A life gone for the sake of money and property, an age old story but still it goes on. My sympathies to all the families involved. This year for the 3rd year I sent a card to the family of a young man who drowned in the river in Norwich outside some nightclubs, he had gone there to meet a friend here for the day and later as they became seperated, Paul had probably leaned over the river to vomit, instead of doing it on the pavement, and fallen in. That night the river level was very high and it was icy cold, the early hours of Feb. 6th '03. and Paul could not see the ladders to swim to, and lost his life. I campaigned for better safety measures, we had already lost two other lads in a similar way since the nightclubs had been built, and Paul's parents asked me to attend the inquest with them. So I can imagine how this lad's family will be feeling and I am crying for them and for Paul's family as I type, and for those two young men lost before they got the chance to fully live their lives. My thoughts too go to Dan's friend, who will live with this for the rest of his life, as Paul's friend does , and for Duncan too. Liz

Hello Philip, what sad news for you and how tragic for his family. I hope the friend continues to recover and that Paula's son manages to come through it OK eventually. My condolences to all and I am thinking of his family. I suppose it is too much to hope that the evil thieves who did it will be caught? Ann Glos
