did you know?that the threshold for being knicked was being 2Mph+10% of the limit. in a 30 zone..thats 2+3=5 ...35 Mph do 36 or more, and you are knicked.!! WRONG!!! Now they are knicking at 35Mph.. 46Mph 57Mph 68Mph 79Mph beware of the SPECS cameras,, they average your speed over a distance, so its no use slowing down under the camera...

But 32mph in a 30 limit - bit harsh isnt it? magin of error has to cut in somewhere. I can assure you I wasnt being daring!

The simple answer is, if you don't want to get done for speeding, don't do it! The speed limits are there for a reason, if everyone realised that instead of playing games with those trying to enforce them, there wouldn't be the need for speed cameras.

Well no actually I wasnt directing that at you Jess. But there are so many who complain about getting done for speeding, as there are those who complain about parking fines. The law is the law, so don't break it or pay the penalty.

The trouble with cameras is, there is no discretion. how do you know that your speedo IS accurate? tyre size/wear will greatly alter the accuracy. And how do you know that the road you are on, IS showing the correct signs? a slip road near me, has national speed limit signs after a roadwork. thats 70mph ( part of a dual carriageway)50 yards further down is the correct sign.......40mph road works' are known for inaccurate signage there MUST be signs on both sides of the carriage way, if there is only one sign visible the limit is illegal

Jess, I dont know if you did contest that charge, but I certainly would have.......I think that it is staffordshire that are counting motorcyclists as guilty, they have to go to court, to prove their innocence, so most cough up to avoid the hassle....... http://www.safespeed.org.uk/ this site is worth looking at Bob

Of course I did Bob, Pretty pointless exercise though. I WAS speeding , end of story .Speed in excess of 30 is over the limit- non negociable

Bobtanian

Bobtanian Report 19 Dec 2006 21:41

I am sorry that you were unsuccessful, Jess, And I am not criticising your driving, but if the police are making drivers watch the speedo instead of the road.........to avoid a two or three mph error......then all I can say is, they are in it for the money...not safety Bob

I've long thought that the police force is gradually becoming another source of revenue collection. Discretion seems to be going out of the window and the idea of a policeman giving anyone a warning or a 'polite reminder' is rapidly becoming history. All in the name of treating people equally I expect. 20 years or so ago my lovely bank manager retired early, also on the basis that he was allowed no discretion and had to apply a points system regardless. No more giving small loans to people in distress whom he knew he could count on to be fiscally responsible, no more personal judgements, and the world is a worse place because of it.

If 30mph is the max why do you have to drive as though its the compulsory speed. Why not drive at 28 mph. Chances are you will get to your destination just as quick after all the traffic lights etc.

BrianW

BrianW Report 20 Dec 2006 09:46

Laws will only be respected and obeyed if they are reasonable. Speed limits are blanket and arbitary. You can't nick someone for speeding if they are doing 29mph in thick fog past as school as the kids are going in or out, but you can get them for doing 35 mph on an empty dual carriageway at three o'clock on a Sunday morning. Both speeds would be inappropriate but only one illegal.

Colin Report 20 Dec 2006 10:16

I believe that there would not be as much effort put into searching for speeding motorists if the police did not benefit from the revenue...........and for those that say don't break the law............consider how much effort is put into prosecuting girls who are pregnant before the age of consent.........
