(¯`*•.¸JUPITER JOY AND HER CRYSTAL BALLS(¯`*•.¸ Report 7 Feb 2007 17:18

3 years ago my mum got robbed,at the time we never knew how much this scum stole from mum.[we predict now possibly around 20.000.]he came selling dusters etc.she was more bothered that the neighbours would think her silly.and begged that we did,nt get the police involved.and in future she would be more carefull.we agreed as she was so upset. 18 months later she sat me down and explained it had happened again.this time the police were involved, and my brother and i agreed any spare money would now go straight to the bank.again not knowing how much they had stolen.police bless em took finger prints ,mum very upset and started to get all confused. this time it was worse as no-one had been in mums or so she thought, she had,nt let anyone in.so who could it be.to this day were not sure as the police found nothing. since we have had the water man twice ,once telling her to remove all from under her sink as there was a water blockage, and it was her flat causing it.hhmmmmmmmmmm. they got nothing that time.then the water man had to test the water,ER YEAH I BET.but she had visitors so she thought well im not going to be burgled when i have friends round. before xmas a scaghead from round the corner, decided he needed money for xmas ,and went round saying .........well you know who i am,i live round the corner,i wondered if you,d like these gift bags for xmas.he brought them in and stole 21 pounds from her,[i think he was hoping for her 300 heating allowance that she fetched that day]well the next door heard and saw the registration of his cronnies car and wrote it down, phoned me and police called again.we actually caught them and they were arrested.he admitted to being in the flat, but said mum bought the xmas bags....all 5 for 21 pounds.so they got off with it.as mum would not be able to stand in court and relay everything that happened that day. NOW she has a panic alarm,a camera, locks bolts ,in fact anything that will keep them out.and has been told by the police whoever comes to the house even with an identity card ....DO NOT LET THEM IN. the problem for my mum is ,she trusts.she is from an era where honesty is the best policy.and all people are nice. shes nearly 84 years old,and its all just too much for her. so if you have elderly parents, keep a check.make sure there money is safe. warn them regular.nag them if you have too. check and double check,as sometimes they dont. if you have elderly neighbours just keep an eye on them.it does,nt cost much time. hope this helps.and saves you from going through all this upset. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx

My mum will be 80 in May and I think she is the opposite of yours and doesnt trust anybody. I think this is why nobody bothers to check on hre to see if she is okay. I was hoping to visit this week as I have time of work. The weather is not in my favour again for going on my mo-ped but am hoping the snow stays away long enough for me to go by bus tomorrow.

My mum goes out to clubs and has her friends but still we constanley have to warn her about letting people in regards how well dressed they are and so on. Make god watch over your mum and keep her safe xxxxxxxxxxxxx

Sorry to hear about your Mum Joy. Same thing happened to our Dad, he bought some dusters ( ahh he said they were just bairns making a bit money) too right they were!. He took them to see his back garden, where he spent most of his days working, and they went into pockets of his jacket hanging in the hall... took wallet and money. This was when Dad was 85 before he took a stroke, my Dad when younger wouldn't have given them the time of day. Very elderly are very vunerable aren't they?We all worked then but visited every day,if only we'd been there at that particular time they wouldn't have known what hit them. Thanks for putting this up Joy and hope Mum is okay. Mau xxx.......

Older people with early alzheimers/dementia will also find themselves taken in by scoundrels like these. They will believe what they are being told even by complete strangers sadly.

Jean Durant Report 7 Feb 2007 18:22

Joy... I am so sorry about what happened to your Mum. My Mum is 90 and lives alone in a ground floor flat. She will insist on keeping money indoors even though I have told I think this makes her even more vulnerable than she already is. She has been housebound for over a year now and has no need to keep money. Doesn't matter how often I tell her she takes no notice. I collect her pension for her every week and she insists on keeping it. I just haven't the heart to tell her I am not going to give it to her. When does the time come when you have to take over and be the parent lol. Jean x.

I have suggested in the past to my mum that she could go to a coffee morning or something similar and she said no cos its all old people lol Dont think she will be going anywhere for a while as she is in so much pain she cant leave the house. She wont admit that she has arthritus or that she is getting old. Her hips are really painful and she cant even get into a taxi now to go to do a shop.

val........ive tried,i said dad would,nt want you at risk mum,and she said.....but joy im so happy here,[gulp] jean.....you sound just like me,mum was happy for me to take over her money, and she can see where it is ,but like you i never ever would have asked personal stuff like how much do you have in the bank, and how much in the flat.when i realised what i could save by putting in the bank i realised how much the scum had taken.i see mum everyday,i clean and do her shopping, cook her meals, take her to get her pension, and any bits she,d like while were there.but i,d love to sleep easy at night and i dont.funny my mum sleeps like a log.lol.x LLC yep thats just mum, also my mums a proper lady, shes so white its unreal.and although she waves to everyone from her window, shes quite a shy person.x

SamInKent Report 7 Feb 2007 21:19

Joy, I just found this in one of mu local papers !!!!....... Bogus caller warning after pair of thefts POLICE are warning elderly residents to watch out for bogus callers following two thefts. North Kent residents should be vigilant when answering the door to anybody claiming to be from a utility company. The burglaries took place in Dene Holm Road, Northfleet, between 11am and noon on January 31. A man claiming to be from the water company asked one resident to look at pipes under the sink. While he distracted the victim, an accomplice entered the property and stole £4,000 from the first house and £9,000 from the second house. The man who distracted the residents is described as white, about 30, with a stocky build and short, dark hair. He spoke with a northern accent. Police advise residents to keep their door security chain on and demand identification from callers. Any witnesses should call north Kent police on 01474 565135. 10:40am today

Bren from Oldham

Bren from Oldham Report 7 Feb 2007 21:50

We had similar problems with my in laws men would turn up saying they were from the council to check the windows heating etc, and whilst one was supposedly checking the other would steal money I used to take any money found and put into her bank account but she would send her husband take it out again After she died we had to take over his financial because large sums of money were being drawn out from his account , yet he never had any We also had trading standards go into a local shop because the owner was not giving O A P's their correct change and pocketing pounds The result was he was imprisoned and a new owner for the shop We are now an OAP's but don't keep large sums of money in the house ,and we don't let anyone into the house unless they are known to us or have some proper identification Bren
