My son has been a police officer for 12 years. A few months ago he stopped a car in Brixton. The man got out and said 'You've only stopped me because I'm black' My son told him 'You are 25 miles over the speed limit in a built up area and as you have heavily tinted windows I couldn't tell if you were red, white or blue'. The man tried to report him for having 'no respect' Who do these people think they are. Everyone has to earn respect. Rant over lol Linda Thought I'd better add 'these people' means anyone who thinks they have the right to speak to people how they like. Don't want to risk being called racist. |

Chris,I agree with you. I find it so ridiculous,. Soldiers are going to be put into situations that Most of us could never understand,Including David Cameron. I think the last thing on their minds would be what someone called them and if they do think like that then their not soldier material, are they?? What is the country coming to!! |

Today we all have to be Politically correct and if that means comments were never made? Well I think not! Well done to those who acknowledge what was said, and do not shoot the messenger. Many comments were and still are made, in a different context and not taken out of context. I have come accross racial discrimination and Hate it, but do know that sometimes comments are made that are nothing to do with who you are or where you come from. Janice x |

You are lucky Joy. Looking back I wish I had been more interested in what my dad did during the war - you can be so dismissive when you are young. Too late now though. Night, night, Lorrainex |

How things have changed - this has brought to mind the Colonel known as Mad Mitch - of the Argle and Sutherland Highlanders I think it was when he marched into Aden. Do we want our military to learn how to be part of a team and come home unscathed or to learn to play pat-a-cake? |

OH and son spluttering with rage when they heard this - again this country has gone mad - everyone is that busy with PC they have forgotten common sense. I agree re the Gurhkas by the way - I could not believe it when I first heard the pensions they were paid. |

It's nice that you've got pics Joy. I've only got a couple of my dad during the war. After he died it was really sad seeing him as a teenager in the pics and reading his comments such as, 'What a handsome lad'. He was given a lot of stick for being a Geordie in the Black Watch! Lorrainex |

Personally,I think its No Business Of any political leader. The British Army have trained the best soldiers for centuries. If this is what works then who are they to tell them how to train their men. Personally,I would be happier if they delt with the Issue Of the Gurka Soldiers being compensated for their loyalty to the British Army,And pay them their worth:-) |

Thanks, Graeme. Just sometimes I feel that we are the second class citizens.(Thankyou Government!) This is probably the cause of people being uneasy about the political climate, not the people themselves. Gail |

My hubby is ex army. I recall him telling me about a particularly offensive sergeant who kept calling everyone b*****. My hubby eventually took exception, and responded with his fists. When summonsed to CO, he explained that he was , in fact a b*****, as he was illegitimate. CO basically said bad luck, son, it is part of army speak! So why now is this officer being punished. As my late father , also ex military, used to say,'When in Rome, do as the Romans Do' . I assume that this is not politically correct either now. Am I still proud to be British......? Gail |

I am a in the TA and have only come back from Iraq In December ... In the Army you worry when people aren't calling you names or Nick names... if they are taking the Pi*s out of you its because you are part of the team.. if you have ginger hair you get called genge if you have big ears you get called wing nut!!! it a handle thats all ! Because I was a techie I got call Sgt Conehead and it was started by the CSM.... and I was proud of that nickname! There is no place for raceism in the army or any type of ism!! but Nick names are a form of camardeare and some people are proud of there Nick names because it stands them out as an individual not a grey man... somebody who just blends into the background... if you are Scotish and proud of it surely in a group of English men to be called Jock is something to be proud of because you have got that name coz you are what you are and its good your mates think of you as that not just another invisible person...... any is'm is wrong!! to be proud of what you are and be nick named because of it isn't its a badge of honor not an insult. A very clear Army Officer once said ' I may not belive what you belive but I will fight to the death for your right to belive it!' The Army I am in still belive that and so do I! we all bled red whatever the colour of our skin... and every skin colour I know has shed their blood in the fight for peace as part of a team black, white, man or woman each one a important cog in the big machine Graeme not Caz |
