Mandy in Wiltshire Report 1 Apr 2007 22:34

I’ve found yet another glitch in GR’s wonderful new system. This account that I use for posting is my ‘birth’ tree so although the name you all see on the boards and PMs is my legal name, the root person in my tree has my birth name. I’ve just realised that the PMs I’ve received since the new system started this week all have my BIRTH name in the title of the message, not my board name! I’m horrified because I don’t want the world and his wife knowing my birth name, I have enough problems with my birth mother as it is. I’ve been into my account details, checked and double-checked, and the name I’m registered under is my current name, therefore messages shouldn’t come up with any other name in the heading, despite that being the root person in my tree. I’m removing my tree from GR right now, and will probably remove my adoptive tree and hubby’s tree too. Mandy

Thank you for that warning, Mandy. Although it doesn't affect us at the moment, I was thinking of doing the childrens' tree on here i.d.c., but won't now. The word paranoid comes to mind - me that is, not you! lol Thanks again. x

Hi Glenys I couldn't believe my eyes - I wondered how on earth the people who had sent messages had discovered my birth name! Of course they hadn't, GR just has yet another bug in the system. If only they tested their new systems fully before they put them live, but they certainly don't seem to. Hope you and the family are well, Mandy xx

JackyJ1593 Report 1 Apr 2007 22:50

I noticed that the title of a message I received had my maiden nae and birth year. I don't use my maiden name in anything on GR and certainly don't advertise my age! I feel this is breaching confidentiality and these details should only be revealed by a GR memer if supplying information for a tree to someone. I have not complained about the GR system before but I do now feel that things are slipping. Jacky :-)

Mandy I dont mind my details showing but am quite concerned that when i looked at some of the members on here that i have sent a pm to their name and year of birth is showing on my contacts! There is no need for this!

Yes Mandy very perturbing - that's why I have one person in my tree - I just look at the hot matches - sadly people with one person in their tree appear to be looked upon with suspicion here!

Kris - I must confess that I was a guilty party, re thinking that. For a while now though, my opinion's changed, as I've seen why they've done it! Mandy - yes, family's fine thanks, though sonny's going through a defiant and thoroughly unpleasant stage (14 now). He's losing all sorts of privileges, though! Hope your crew are OK - and that FIL recovers soon. x

Soooooooooo glad I removed my tree a while ago. Shocking development and a breach of confidentiality even though it doesn't concern me personally I will be complaining about this. There is no excuse for this it is disgusting. xx

It is shocking when your details are discovered isn't it - this seems to be a fault of the system rather than someone deliberately posting your private datails

So does this mean that if I change my name in my tree I will show up as that name......or do I have to change it in my account details? *confused*

Mandy in Wiltshire Report 1 Apr 2007 23:24

Thank you for your replies. I have no objection to people using my 'real' name as oppsed to my board name, and I've often referred to my husband and son on here by name, but to use a birth name that's not even in our account details is something else! I've now removed my tree and GR will be getting a full complaint tomorrow morning. Mandy

This is appalling. It was bad enough to find that if one clicks on a name, one can see the person's surname - ie I can see yours, Jeanette - without sending a PM, but this is terrible.

well,it annoys me that they keep changing these things ,yet we joined under certain terms...that are no longer there.but they expect us to keep to the terms that they set out when we joined..double standards if u ask me.

I have complained to Genes earlier today - I feel that this latest development may breach Data Protection - let alone leave us open to identity fraud by unscrupulous individuals Jeanette - change your maiden surname in 'my account details' to something 'interesting' :-) Maz. XX

Kim from Sandhurst Report 1 Apr 2007 23:41

Am I missing something here? I don't see any 'surname' or anything else for that matter when I 'click on' on some ones name, just the 1st name, ie Jeanette or Maid Marion. am I doing something different to anyone else? I have emailed GR asking about joined date and how many they have in tree, as I like to know and why it's not shown now. When contacting, I like to know how long they have been on here and if I am possibly going to be supplying them with a 'whole' tree dating back to whenever when they have only '1' in their tree. Tthis facility is now going to make me suspicisous of everyone, and I am not going to 'traid' anymore, not until this mess gets sorted. Kim

Hi Kim I've just been into my account details and removed my surname. I then had to go into my tree to remove my year of birth as that was showing too!
